SWANSEA'S DVLA is selling off drivers' names and addresses to clamping companies that break industry rules, it has emerged.

An investigation has uncovered the agency made more than £4 million during the last year through the sale of 1.6 million drivers' details.

A total of 900 names and addresses were sold to Newline Securities and Parking Control Management — both have repeatedly double-charged drivers for parking breaches and hit them with £500 fines for minor parking offences.

It is said the agency has continued the sell-off of details despite being aware of the companies actions.

But the DVLA has insisted it denies access to the vehicle register to companies which have breached the industry code on parking enforcement.

A DVLA spokesman said: "We keep our processes under constant review to ensure they remain robust."

“It seems that the DVLA does not care about the 'victims'! How can the DVLA's checking be so 'robust', if it keeps (reportedly) getting caught out again and again by bad 'Business' practices! Shouldn't the Information Commissioner be getting involved if Personal Data is possibly getting misused!? It is Senior Management that is to blame if systems and procedures are being 'broken'!

“Ex-DVLA employee is wrong, the DVLA is not Swansea's biggest employer. It employs 6000 staff, NHS trust employs 16,000.”

“I worked for DVLA as summer job inbetween college years last year and I have never met people like them before! I worked in the contact centre and all of my colleagues we're amazing-they had time for everybody and did their jobs incredibly well! Lets not forget that DVLA is the biggest employer in Swansea and its not the "little people" that are doing this.

I agree with everyone below me though senior heads need to roll. They have some very shady practices, all to ensure they keep the most money in their pockets.

I myself think the most dreadful thing they do is advertised temporary jobs and at the interviews say that they will be 100% made permanent, allow the new staff to get settled and trained and then end their contracts the day before the new financial year starts so that it saves them money. They then recruit new temps and have to use tax payers money to recruit and train again then a few months after being trained cut them lose again.....its a neverending costly cycle! I speak from experience, not that it affected me because I was going back to college but other people had families to support.”

“What about the thousands of asylum seekers who have stolen identities from 'the dead' that have been caught out by the DVLA and their rigorous checking? They have done a lot to stop fraud, which is increasing day by day. The EP should investigate and see the GOOD done by DVLA and start laying off the facts that they have not got completely right! I personally am sick to death of EP gunning for DVLA, it's about time they supported some of the work done there. Lay off.”

“While there is a serious question over the principles of what is being reported, there is nothing in this on-line report to confirm what DVLA is doing is unlawful. DVLA appear to be breaching their own rules and common principles, which is questionable to say the least but not unlawful (unless this is clarified in the full 'paper' report, in which case I retract this paragraph) .

I am not defending DVLA, as a principle is sometimes as important as law and this applies in this case. However, two wrongs do not make a right and any comments seeking retribution simply because DVLA applied the law to them, should have kept their own house in order rather than seek justification from this story.

I have worked there and know the employees are fed up with the negative reporting of the Post, being tarred by isolated stories that are management decisions, and by the handling of these stories when reported.

    1. DVLA, get your house in order. If the stories are accurate admit you're wrong and explain what you will do about it. If it is inaccurate, defend yourself against the story.
    2. Those commenting that broke the law, accept your punishment and stop whinging.”

“Pete, this is just another example of government incompetency, it follows on from Social Service's, Probation departments, Justice departments, Police, and any other area that comes under the local, and National Government.
They basically, are so incompetent, and inefficient, because they can get away with it, and no one asks questions, the Government has proved this, Labour, Conservative, etc.
I do not want this department ever issuing I.D. cards, can you imagine the identity theft implications.
The sooner we have a Democratic, coalition Government the better, its a sad indictment on today's society.”
