SWANSEA was buzzing with cyclists today as the ever-popular Gower Bike Ride rode into town.

More than 1,500 people took part in The British Heart Foundation's (BHF) annual fundraiser, 300 more than last year.

Organiser Hannah Townsend said she was thrilled with the turnout. She said: "We had more people sign up before the day, so we were off to a good start. There is always a lot of enthusiasm for the ride, but this year was a big success."

This year the entry fee increased from £10 to £15 for adults and the ride kicked off in the Recreation Ground, rather than inside St Helen's rugby ground.

But that did not deter riders who showed up en masse to take on either the 16 or 29-mile courses.

“as one of the cyclists who rides without a helmet, i`d like to ask all the whingers (mr.pendleberry) if he wore a helmet to cycle as a child; i bet not.this is another example of health and safety gone mad. if we keep proteccting everybody from every risk of any level of injury we are going to end up with a spineless generation who need to take pain killing drugs for a scratch.so mr.p what do you do for exercise/fun? tiddlywinks? if so wear a full face helmet incase you flick a chip into your eye.”

“In a recent health kick I made the plunge and got my self a brand spanking new mountain bike.(my previous hobbie of free running was proving a little unweilding on the joints). A friend of mine suggested that the gower bike ride would be a great way to embrace my new exercise of choice. Although having used the wonderful evening post web site to research I am not so sure. The extreme views posted on here by Mr Pendleberry and other swansea inhabitants has made me realise that the world of bike riding in the gower is a dog eat dog business. More consideration is needed.”

“As the organiser for the British Heart Foundation's Gower Bike Ride I'd like to say a massive thank you to all the people who took part on Sunday. Its thanks to people like you that the BHF can continue its fight against heart disease in Wales. I also want to thank all the volunteers who helped make the day a great success.
I would also like to thank everyone who has a left a comment on this webpage - we really appreciate your feedback and support.
As for the comment about the burger van, we do try to have healthy food available at all our events, which was the case on Sunday - and the van offered a wide range of refreshments so that people could make a choice as to a healthy or a rather more calorie-laden option for that day.

In reply to the comment about helmets, we strongly advise all our participants to wear a helmet for their own safety, but as this is not law we are unable to enforce this at our events: all we can do is ensure that we have a sufficient number of marshals and first aid to hand if an incident was to happen.
I do hope to see many more at next year's event and hope that we can make the ride bigger and better - for all who want to be part of the fight against heart disease in Wales.

“I entered the Gower Bike Ride this year for the first time and thoroughly enjoyed it, cycling 29 miles over the undulating Gower countryside is no mean feat and I think you have to get on your bike and do it for yourself to realise that! It isn't a bit of fun on a bike, it's bloody hard work done for a very worthy cause.
So I'm very slighlty peeved that there are a handful of moaning myrtles on here who obviously have nothing better to do than complain because it probably took ten minutes more to drive to the shops last Sunday.
Arthur...I notice that your apparent lack of compassion for cyclists melts away when it comes to yobs flouting the law; when the Post covered the story on the career criminal Scott Parry recently, who was the first person in Swansea to be given an Asbo back in 2002, when he was just 17 years old and who was recently spared jail, again, your comment was and I quote: "Arthur Pendleberry said: "I hope Scott gets all the help he needs." Hmm, yes, going on a bike ride without a helmet is much worse, isn't it! I can't work out if you are a do-gooder or just someone who likes to antagonise by going against the grain, either way I think you have way too much time on your hands and suggest you take up a hobby! Knitting perhaps as cycling or charity work don't appear to be your cup of tea?
Well done to everyone who took part and raised money for the BHF, see you next year ; )”

“For the person commenting about cyclist wearing helmets - you have to realise that the BHF cannot make the riders wear the helmets as they are cycling on public roads. However when cycle ride is held as with the Junior Bike Ride held a week earlier in Singleton Park, Swansea City Council bylaws stipulate the wearing of a cycle helmet or you dont cycle in organised events. As for the comments pf drinking - again the BHF cannot stop this. It's also a fact that some groups of riders had on Saturday night stashed 6 packs of beer in hedgerows along the route - so even if you set a route to miss every pub, some will find a way around it. All that the BHF can do is provide marshals and medical support. I congratualte all who took part a final total of 1400 cyclist raising much need funds for the British Heart Foundation. I would also like to thank the many volunteers who gave up their time to support this event - the marshals, RAYNET (provinding emergency communications), St John, British Red Cross, and several Community First Responder teams who all worked together to ensure the cyclist had as safe a ride as possible - I take my het off to them - well done - great team effort”

“I did the ride on Sunday and while I and over a thousand others thoroughly enjoyed the day, I agree that there were too many riders without helmets. In crowded groups accidents can easily happen so why take the risk of serious head injury. You don't need to be "crushed under a 4X4" to be seriously brain damaged for the rest of a life of complete dependence on others for everything you now take for granted.
Also, there were too many riders oblivious of other cyclists and the traffic around them. People riding 2 and 3 abreast chatting to each other while holding up the main field and motorists trying to get past. I saw several instances along the Penclawdd road of riders passing in the face of oncoming traffic. It gives cyclists a bad name and leads to comments like Pendleberry's. If you're not prepared to behave responsibly and safely - stay away.”
