Cwtch: What a Carry On
THE application by Swansea to become the city of culture is one of the most farcical ideas since Sid James and the Carry On series of films. In fact the films were almost as humorous as the word that has been chosen to represent the city.
What juvenile mind in its right senses would have picked a totally meaningless word like cwtch which sounds horribly similar to a bronchitic cough with all that connotation.
The preponderance of emphasis on Dylan Thomas as a major literary asset seems like a drowning man clutching at straws as his writings can be compared to the mumblings of an inebriated man, which was the eventual cause of his demise, and if this is culture then the same prose can be heard regularly in Wind Street on a Saturday night.
Your correspondent (Have Your Say, Oct 8 ) asks, and this could possibly be tongue in cheek, if there are better poems and poets perhaps he should try Keats, Shelley, Kipling and Elizabeth Barrat Browning for starters.
