A MOTHER whose six-old son was killed by a car on Cardigan bypass three years ago has spoken of her disappointment at the latest plans.

Kathryn George-Harries said her demands for a footbridge on the A487 have been ignored.

She dismissed the news that the Tesco junction will finally be reopened after it was announced that traffic lights will be placed at the troubled turning.

Her son Freddie, a pupil at Ysgol y Ddwylan, was hit as the family crossed the bypass between the Pontycleifion roundabout and Tesco junction in September 2006.

She said: "My son was killed. I thought originally that if I went round all the politicians, there might be something done.

"But they are so de-sensitised and nothing has happened."

She said the reopening of the Tesco junction with traffic lights was a mistake.

"All this is giving people is set of traffic lights which should have been there in the first place," she said. "There needs to be a roundabout there so people don't come tearing down that bypass.

"The road needs to be slowed down. I think what's going on is a complete waste of time."

"It's obvious what needs to be done there. slow vehicles down along the bypass and put a footbridge there."

Cardigan mayor councillor Mark Cole said: "A footbridge would be ideal but at least what we've got now is progress at Tesco junction after the years of paralysis."

The Assembly has said it overhauled the bypass, including putting up warning signs, after the fatal crash. Spokesperson Seb Hains said: "Following the extremely unfortunate and tragic incident at this junction, we undertook a full safety review of this site.

"This review concluded that, given the minimal level of use at the crossing, the current facilities were adequate.

"It is felt that a footbridge over the A487 cannot be justified on economic grounds at this stage."
