Crackdown on illegal parking at Neath Port Talbot taxi ranks
MOTORISTS are being urged not to park illegally in taxi ranks throughout Neath Port Talbot.
Licensing officers have been out and about across the county enforcing taxi rank rules to stop people misusing them.

Driver Andy Lodwig, who is concerned about the new taxi ranks in Neath town centre.
Taxi drivers in Neath are also calling on residents not to abuse taxi ranks in the town centre because of the problems it creates.
Chairman of Neath's Chamber of Trade Andrew Lodwig, who is a town cabbie, said they need to make residents and visitors aware that they can't use the ranks for parking or dropping or picking people up.

"The rank at The Parade is for the taxis between 8pm and 6am," he said.
"We are coming up with a lot of abuse from the public.
"There is no money in the pot for taxi marshals so we have to deal with the matter ourselves.
"We have been allocated these parking spaces between 8pm and 6am, but drivers are obstructing us so we can't work.
"If people want to park in the night there are some new bays by the Croft area."
Mr Logwig said the bays by Wilkinsons are a 24-hour, seven-days-a-week rank.
"On a Sunday the boys can't park there because of all the cars and they have to go on double yellow lines," he said.
The council's director of finance and corporate services Derek Davies said: "We are aware that members of the public are parking on taxi ranks throughout the borough and licensing officers have carried out recent enforcement advising the public not to park illegally on taxi ranks.
"The licensing section would like to reiterate that the Parade taxi rank in Neath is operational from 8pm to 6am seven days a week."
Neath Port Talbot Council is currently completing a seven- month £1 million upgrade to The Parade, which has included the taxi ranks, new paving and lighting.

“Walesforever, what a snob; what is so wrong about a cabbie being the President of the Chamber of Trade, you have a selective memory of past Chamber Officers.
The longest serving President in recent times ran a sub post office in the Whimpey estate up the Cimla, another long term President had a mobile locksmith business.
The important point is not what business these people own, it is that they were all committed to support Neath town centre.
I hope Mr Lodwig does not take the words of self opinionated bigots to heart as without people like you mr Lodwig Neath would be a far worse place”

“Is it any wonder that Neath is going slowly down the pan. Without wishing to be derogatory to Mr Lodwig, or the taxi drivers of N.P.T.
Neath Chamber of Trade used to be made up of the business people of the town, people with, rightly or wrongly, money and influence. People who had invested in the town by investing their money in business within the town.
Doesn't it look great for the Post to print that the chairman of the Chamber of trade is a town cabbie ?
What does that say to anyone who may be thinking of investing in Neath ?
I think it gives out the message, that anyone can see when walking around the town, that Neath as far as buisness is concerned, is slowly dying.”

“flepwales - I have seen plenty of taxi drivers using mobile phones without hands free kits and I doubt that most of the people out in the nights on a weekend are incapable of walking a few yards (unless of course to too much alcohol). if you think that taxi drivers are the knights of the road then thats your opinion but it is completely different from mine and as a result I have not used a taxi for a good number of years and have no intention of using one in the future.”

“maxmin I`m with you on this, taxi drivers have to make a living, nearly all taxi drivers I have come across now have some sort of hands free kit unlike most of the general driving public.
When Intelligent1 is old or has some sort of disability and the driver insists in dropping him off 300yds from his house in the rain because its the only place to pull in, I guess then he will also complain.”

“maxmin - I am just saying that if they want consideration then perhaps they should show it to others. Next you will be saying it is perfectly legal for them to use their mobile phone whilst driving. Perhaps i should make it clear that thy do not only drop off and pick up on yellow lines but also wait on them for ages. I am sure that most people would agree that the attitute of a large number of taxi drivers on the roads is far from polite and considrate to other road users.”

“I'm sorry intelligent one you are perhaps misinformed. Anyone can pull up on double yellow lines to drop off or pick up passengers.(London Borough of Southwark v Mrs D Wanambwa) If a taxi is going down the road and is hailed he is obliged by law to stop, if there is nowhere he can pull off the road then he has to momentarily stop where he is.
Hackney carriage drivers are obliged to stop when their passenger says so. Obviously they will always try and stop in the best possible space but sometimes their hands are tied.
If you park in a properly constituted taxi rank without being a registered Hackney carriage that is an offence under the law and the police are obliged to take action.”

“Chairman of Neath's Chamber of Trade Andrew Lodwig, who is a town cabbie, said they need to make residents and visitors aware that they can't use the ranks for parking or dropping or picking people up.
perhaps Mr Lodwig should also remind taxi drivers that they should not use yellow lines, the middle of the road, or enywhere else they feel like to park, drop off or pick up people.
if they want consideration over their taxi ranks perhaps they should show consideration to other road users. Correct parking (not stopping in the middle of the road o pick up and drop off), indicating, driving within the speed limits, not using mobile phones etc etc all help to make the driving experience more pleasant.”
