Couple gutted Morgans hotel room of TV, linen and minibar
A COUPLE gutted their hotel room of its television, linen, minibar contents and even the pictures from the wall during a stay in Swansea.
Laura Barnett, aged 25, of Brynglas Avenue in Cwmavon, had booked the Ospreys room at Morgans hotel in Swansea with her husband Christopher to celebrate his birthday.
The couple checked in on September 26 before going on a night out in the city centre and returning at 6.40am after drinking heavily.
Around 9am, CCTV recorded Laura Barnett leaving the hotel carrying a large bag, that bag contained linen, dressing gowns, the contents of the minibar, a telephone and even pictures from the walls of the room.
She took that bag to her car and was then recorded standing outside the hotel, waiting by the window of the room.
The curtains were seen to move before the room’s television was passed by her husband through the window.
The pair’s plan came undone when Christopher Barnett went to reception and complained about items on his bill relating to pay-per-view TV and said his room did not have a television inside.
Prosecutor Sharon Anderson told city magistrates: “Staff became suspicious and the porter checked the room and found most of the contents had been removed.”
Police were called and the pair were arrested.
Christopher Barnett was jailed earlier this week for 16 weeks for his part in the theft, which both pleaded guilty to.
His wife received a community order of 12 months and was told to compete 80 hours unpaid work.
Her solicitor, Mike Spring, told court she had been pressured into doing it by her husband but described the incident as “bizarre”.
He said she had lied to police in her interview, where she said she had acted alone, because her husband was already subject to a suspended sentence.
