PICTURE a beautiful country cottage surrounded by a flower filled garden, nestled amid the tranquil surroundings of meadows and hedgerows and Hawthorn Cottage in Fairwood is probably exactly what springs to mind.
When you approach Hawthorn Cottage you do so along a narrow country lane that has trees on either side offering a canopy of shade from the bright morning sunshine and as you continue uphill the road opens out in to a delightful dell where standing before you is this enchanting cottage.
Huw Morgan is the proud owner of Hawthorn Cottage and with his three children has enjoyed many happy times at this idyllic, rustic retreat.
Although Hawthorn Cottage looks as if it has been tucked away in the colourful countryside for over a century, it was built less than fifteen years ago. This was one of the reasons why Huw was immediately attracted to this desirable cottage.
"The fact that the cottage looked so charming with a traditional stone finish really appealed to me. Then when I entered inside the home, the exposed beams and traditional floors just added to the original cottage feeling," recalls Huw.
Thankfully, with Hawthorn Cottage nowhere near as old as it first appears, the only work that needed doing was purely cosmetic. Huw decorated throughout and also plumbed the wiring for all of the audio visual entertainment system into the walls.
This spacious cottage has a lovely, large lounge with exposed beams and French doors opening out on to a sunken patio area surrounded by the picturesque garden. Across the paved hallway from the lounge is the dining room, a study that can be used as a playroom and a utility room.
There is a capacious country kitchen complete with breakfast room and an array of modern appliances that actually blend well with the traditional design. The large French doors leading to the patio allow natural light to flood through the room all year long and is somewhere that Huw loves to spend time.
"My favourite room is the country kitchen because when I come downstairs in the morning I love looking out into the beautiful garden with its variety of colourful shrubs, plants and flowers," says Huw.
Upstairs sees four bedrooms all of which offer magnificent views of the surrounding countryside. The master bedroom has a luxurious en-suite and every ladies dream - a walk in wardrobe. There is also an additional room which is currently being used as a music room and offers some much needed solitude for those with hectic lifestyles.
The majestic family bathroom continues the combination of traditional looks and contemporary fittings that works so well throughout the cottage and is another reason why Huw moved here.
"Because Hawthorn Cottage was built only a few years ago it offers all of the benefits that modern homes can provide. With new wiring, excellent insulation from the weather and a host of modern facilities, the combination of old world charm and modern comforts is ideal," comments Huw.
The Cottage looks beautiful all year around especially when snow falls during winter. Returning home you can kick off your snow encrusted, muddy boots in the storm porch and step into the lounge where the log burner helps transform the cottage into a safe haven, keeping the biting cold at bay. As inviting as this sounds winter is not Huw's favourite season at Hawthorn Cottage. "My favourite time of the year is spring time when the roses and the pieris start to blossom in the garden and their beautiful scents drift into the cottage through the open patio doors, filling the rooms with fresh, fragrant aromas" explains Huw.
This large fragrant garden is divided by a fence and wooden archway with a children's play area on one side and a more mature, landscaped garden with a variety of shrubs, plants and flowers on the other. Steps lead down from the garden onto a paved patio with rustic, outdoor furniture and a barbecue area making it ideal for entertaining.
The youngest child loves playing outside in such an exciting and safe environment and for older children and adults it is ideally situated to explore the surrounding Gower countryside either on foot or by bicycle. With ponies, sheep and cows grazing freely on the nearby common it is hard to believe that the hustle and bustle of the city centre is only a few minutes' drive away.
Hawthorn Cottage is a truly beautiful home in an equally impressive setting and a place that Huw and his family have cherished living in.
"I will forever relish my time living in this lovely home surrounded by such beauty," adds Huw. "And I will never forget how daily stress levels always faded away once I drove into the lane."
