Country could lead with green policies
SMALL nations like Wales can lead the way in developing green and sustainable policies, the Welsh Environment Minister has said.
AM John Griffiths made the comment after returning from the UN Conference on Sustainable Development in Rio, where he was part of the UK delegation.
The conference saw representatives from more than 100 countries, along with charities, businesses and other organisations getting together to discuss environmental issues.
The Griffiths said the conference had been very productive, but that it was clear that global negotiations by national governments inevitably lagged behind the ambitions of smaller nations, regions, cities and business.

He said: "It is clear that smaller countries like Wales can show a lead and set examples in how to create sustainable places and practices.
"In Wales, we now have the opportunity to further demonstrate this by creating our own ground- breaking legislation on sustainable development."

“No matter how small a nation is it can still strive to become as green as possible. I think it's great that we have a government here in Wales which puts green matters at the forefront”

“creating our ground breaking-legislation on sustainable development". What's all that about ?
I suppose after you've had a nice all-expenses paid trip to Rio de Janeiro. You've got to come up with some "profound statement" to justify your jolly, sorry, hardworking far flung absorbing and highly complex vital conference.
In the meanwhile, nothing will happen. Greedy developers will still try and plaster Welsh hillsides and moorland, with higher and higher wind turbines. In the hope that they can get them established, before this government finally "cottons on" that wind power is just fleecing customers, and it's own "green subsidies".”

“We have a lot of rivers here in Wales, plenty of energy there and they do not seem to die down much these days. I know that some tree hugging hippies do not like that idea but they need to complain about everything to justify their lack of enthusiasm for doing any proper work so come on WAG, start using all that energy locked up in our river systems.”
