A SWANSEA councillor says she understands residents' frustrations with DVLA staff in Clase after a vandalism attack which left two dozen cars damaged.

Employees at the government department had their car tyres slashed last week while they were in work.

Parking has long been a thorny issue in the communities around the Clase-based DVLA, with complaints about staff leaving their cars on residential streets.

Now Mynyddbach councillor Audrey Clement said: "While I cannot condone such behaviour, I do understand the frustration felt by residents living around the DVLA," she said.

"In fairness to the DVLA, they have tried to address this problem but without success."

Eyewitnesses said as many as 40 cars had been attacked — police have said they are aware of 17 so far, but are expecting more victims to come forward.

One DVLA worker caught up in the incident, who did not want his name published for fear of further attacks, said: "We came out of work and every car in the road had its tyres slashed — it was unbelievable. People were left stranded, nobody could get home."

But Councillor Clement added: "Tenth Avenue and the car park at the rear is always full of cars by DVLA staff and these drivers take a short cut from Long View Road into and through Penrhiw Sheltered Accommodation."

Responding to problems at Penrhiw, the council's cabinet member for housing Peter May said: "The council has previously written to the DVLA informing them of the problems that can be caused by cars parked in the residents' parking area of Penrhiw Court Sheltered Accommodation."

Meanwhile the DVLA said everything was being done by the department to discourage staff from parking in residential areas.

A spokesman said: "We have every sympathy with those affected by this vandalism. We actively encourage the use of a range of parking facilities. These include, car sharing, subsidised works buses, prioritised permits, overflow parking and a park and ride facility at Felindre, which has capacity far greater than our needs."

“Yes I also agree that the green grass verges on Clasemont Road are being ruined by the occupents of houses parking their vehicles on them. Today I passed and noticed one grass verge tremendously damaged and parked nearby is a 4x4 and a pick-up vehicle parked on the pavement, big massive muddy trench in the grass verge, obviously nothing to do with DVLA staff. These residents should pay for that damage. Evening Post where is your photographer, send him up and shame them. This is a main gateway road to and fro Swansea, these people should leave the DVLA staff alone and get their priorities in order.”

“C S, Morriston, you are right to complain about residents parking on grass verges etc (I don't know if you notice but in Swansea people are not parking on pavements forcing pedestrians to walk on the road). This is wrong - no doubt about it. BUT WHERE ARE THE COUNCIL; WHERE ARE THE WARDENS, we need traffic wardens, we need them to book the offenders, including those residents who have such little respect for the area in which they live. If the council can't do the job - which they obviously can't then the police should take over.

I am trying to keep calm but illegal parking really is like showing me a red rag!”

“Excuse me Kathryn, Gower, but I actually work at DVLA and over the years I get to know which cars live on Clasemont Road and which cars 'don't'. Many of the residents on Clasemont Road are multiple car occupents, some with their cars on their drives and some actually parked on the grass verges outside the houses. Year after year the daffodils planted there are ruined by these residents and their selfish destroying of these flowers. The groves and tyre marks left on the grass verges also spoil the look of Clasemont Road. Pot calling the kettle black I think. So if the residents don't give a hoot, why should others who are at least parked legally give a hoot. Before you ask do I park in Clase, the answer to that is no, I actually walk. to work!”

“I remember the DVLA being built. I remember the farm that as children we played in. I have not lived in Penrhiw Road for over 30 years. However, I recently visited an old family friend and could not park in the road. I ended up parking at a friends house at Clasemont Road. I agree the area at the bottom of Clase has huge issues with parking, something my family never experienced whilst I was growing up and it must be miserable for people now living there. The area where the car tyres were damaged is where we played cricket as children - not so anymore, the children of this area no longer have anywhere to play, aside from if they walk to the top of Clase. The staff from the DVLA have a free park and ride at Velindre, it simply does not make sense that they should park anywhere else. The argument regarding flexi time from one of your readers is simply inadequate and purely selfish. I would have thought that a civil servant would now better. My sympathy lies with the residents of the forgotten area at the bottom of Clase and Clasemont”

“Peter, Swansea - I think you are roight on one point. The DVLA should have been located in the city centre. With up to 5000 workers we'd have a very vibrant city centre and it would probably mean lots more shops opening to service the workers.”

“Yes, as I clearly said Heather provided they aren't parking illegally then they can park where they like. I can't defend those who are clearly parking illegally and will not try to. However for those parking on the public highway where no restrictions exist what exactly are they doing that's so terrible? Parking their car where they're legally allowed to? Its might be a frustration to residents but to be blunt its tough luck. I find it a constant annoyance that I'm not a millionaire playboy living in Barbados but I deal with it.
Also your comment "many of those who do park outside other people's houses would be the ones who would not appreciate people doing the same outside theirs" is rather elightening. It's good to know assumption plays such a pivitol role in your opinion forming process.”

“LegalMotorist, Swansea you are absolutely correct, people do not OWN the spaces outside their houses. However, when you have residents permit bays then it IS illegal to park there. As is it illegal to block a private access.

Unfortunately two vehicles decided to block our driveway over the past month; we called the police and the offending vehicle were removed. Job done. Simple!

Many of those who do park outside other people's houses would be the ones who would not appreciate people doing the same outside theirs.

Park illegally and you should pay a heavy price. What is the problem with that? Unless you break the law yourself of course!”

“People who work for the DVLA should live in Clase.
People who live in Clase should work at the DVLA.
People who live in Clase but do not work for the DVLA should be forced to move elsewhere.

The above solution not only solves the parking problem but also reduces the reliance on motorised vehicles, cuts down on unnecessary pollution and helps this country to lower its carbon emissions.”

“HURRAH! At last someone talking sense. I TOTALLY agree with EVERYTHING you say here. I have also paid extortionate monies to keep my car on the road and I also intend using it and I WILL park wherever the law says I CAN park albiet outside someones house, business, shop, factory WHATEVER! As for Heather, Mumbles - she has made numberous neighbours and visitors to Mumbles lives Hell so we will ignore her comments!”
