Corus 'to pay thousands' after corrosive dust coats cars and homes
PEOPLE whose cars and houses were covered with a corrosive cloud from Corus in Port Talbot could get pay-outs worth thousands of pounds.
The steel giant has said its insurers are already looking at claims for compensation after the company admitted liability.

And more claims could be in the pipeline.
It follows an incident on August 27 when a blanket of pollution fell in Wood Street and Margam Road in Taibach, leaving many people with expensive clean-up and repair bills.
Corus spokesman Robert Dangerfield said: "We had an emission from the blast surface caused by a bleeding valve which resulted in iron fallout over a limited area.
"It was not an anticipated incident and obviously every effort has been taken to speak with people affected.
"Those people have now been put directly in contact with our insurers who will assess their claims."
Residents in Margam said the cloud left vehicles and metal fittings covered with a corrosive orange crust.
Wood Street resident Paul Coventry said: "It's happened before, but not as bad as this. The chemicals react with damp air and turn any bit of metal to rust.

"I've just bought a £40,000 camper van which is ruined. It's new but there's orange patches forming all around it. There's probably another £10,000 worth of damage to the house."
The 42-year-old added: "There's a chap down the road whose car is in such a state that mechanics have told him it's a right-off. People's conservatories have been covered in rust and houses have been affected."
Mr Dangerfield stressed Corus was very concerned about the incident. He said: "We take these issues incredibly seriously and have conducted a thorough investigation."

“We recently read and saw the photographs about the dramatic orange dust storm that devastated Sydney, NSW Australia - people called it a freak of nature - well for some in Port Talbot, Taibach and Margam an "orange dust storm" is a normal occurrence and not a freak of nature but man made pollution from the Steel Works. It's pointless buying a new car in Port Talbot, because of the air borne pollution causes the paint work to become tarnished and expensive metallic paints are the worst effected. So we read about the visible damage caused to the vehicles and homes of these people, however successive Governments have simply taken a blind eye to the health issues of the residents of Port Talbot. We have clowns in London - who couldn't care less about Port Talbot residents - making decisions that without over dramatizing the fact are putting a death sentence on the residents of Port Talbot by authorising the building of the wood burning Power Station. You can see it now - "we have this green energy target to meet - a biomass power station in Port Talbot - yes that sounds fine".....What the operators of this wood burning Power Station will not tell you is that most of the worlds other biomass power stations have been built many miles away from any residential areas for the following reasons: 1 - They DO pollute 2 - They DO give off massive amounts of Carbon dioxide - after all they are burning WOOD 3 - They do massively increase the Particulate Matter (the smoke from the chimney) in the local environment 4 - They DO massively increase the noise pollution - under normal working conditions and massively when there are technical problems - the steam is as a matter of safety vented to atmosphere (our local environment) - the noise will be horrendous. Given all of the above - on top of the pollution given off from this "worlds largest" wood burning power station we will have massive pollution at sea from the increased ships delivering the suspect wood to be chipped and of course the massive increase in trucks taking away the ash from the wood burning process. If you can afford to move from Port Talbot do it soon as the price of houses will fall so much that you could not give away the houses once this filthy power station is built and operational. The pollution we get daily from the Steel Works will be seen as a small shower compared to the huge storm that we will get from this filthy wood burning power station.”
