Corus chiefs under fire in bonuses row
ANGRY steelworkers in Port Talbot have blasted Corus bosses for failing to pay them their cash bonuses.
The decision to withhold the payments has put the Tata-owned giant on a collision course with union leaders, who are preparing to take legal action.
Workers in Port Talbot have now contacted the Post to voice their disgust at the way they are being treated.
They said they had bent over backwards to keep the plant commercially viable by co-operating with a £250 million cost reduction "weathering the storm" programme.
"Now Corus has the nerve to set up a welfare system for employees in financial hardship, of which there are many, and offering loans," one worker said.
"We can borrow our own money and then pay it back to them with interest, when they are the cause of the hardship."
Workers in Port Talbot, like others within the Corus Strip Products division, have not received their first-quarter bonus.
Those at Trostre, which is part of another division, have had theirs but will not be getting a second-quarter bonus.
Community union is preparing to go to industrial tribunal over the first-quarter bonuses only, but said it would support any branches that wanted to ballot on industrial action.
Corus says it is committed to bonus payments, but says it is imperative they are linked to current priorities and the company's ability to pay. It also claims discussions have not progressed because of disagreements about the company's pension scheme proposals.

“The corus bonus is part of the terms and conditions signed by every employee when they started. It is and has always been for the last 30 years part of their pay. The unions had agreed to that instead of fighting for a higher basic salary (worst mistake in the history of steel) because now the company thinks it can just take it. If that was legal don't you think they would have done it years ago? And whats the deal with them pushing to save 250 million quid when I heard that corus as a whole made 106 million profit in this quater even though they only forcast 50 million. I think the 250 million saving is what it will cost to get a large enough helicopter to lift up the blasts and fly them to india lol. keep saving boys and ill see you soon..................................................................................................................in the job center lol”

“With regard to the comment made about spending what we didnt have. The bonus was displayed on our wage slips, then stopped a day or so before being put into our wages. There was no notice given, and corus has also admitted it was wrong to do what it did with regard to Q1 bonus. This was back in July, it is now november and thousands of employees at |Corus are still no better off regarding information. There is more at stake than just the bonus, it is the principle as well. As has been stated... lose Port Talbot and S wales becomes a ghost town !!! Corus plead poverty, and use the economy as justification for their actions. Our industry is more threatened by our board and the dutch plant than the economy. We in the UK are an easy target, and the workforce has bent over backwards to reach the targets set before us. In our industry a million doesnt go far, and the million you speak of is allocated to training not wages. Training individuals in various fields, H&S requires us to have everything in order and i for one am not going to do something i am not trained to do as it could result in serious injury or even death. Training also allows us to do more jobs ourselves, which helps to save money.
With regard to Overtime & Annualised Hours, Both gone.
We have saved tens of millions over the last couple of years, yes but at a cost. Some are on good wages others are on less than some of the contractors working there, as you worked there you should know that.
The Pension is also under threat for future generations, would you wish us to say nothing now about that and let others loose out in the future?
We are asking for fairness, and for the company to treat us with the same respect that it expects us to bring to work each day. No more no less!”

“I'm not bitter, they have stories printed on here about how hard done by they are. they are not hard done by. Yes I have seen the conditions there, I've even worked there years ago when the conditions were worse. They have saved 250million in 1 year, they are all on good wages, plus overtime, plus some on annualised hours. The word bonus is exactly that, a bonus. You earn a bonus, and in this climate they have not earned a bonus. I don't want the place to close, but its rediculous that they want money from the assembly to save jobs at threat and then say they deserve a bonus. They havent earned it, the fact that they could save 250million, boast about hitting records on production (when there is still only 1 converter in use) is rediculous. It shows just how relaxed an atmosphere there was before. They've had it good for a long time, now its time to either knuckle down and get on with it or move on. Its not a wage cut, its a bonus, if they spent it before having it, more fool them. The bonus culture is long gone. And attacking Corus staff is not as insensitive as floating a bonus after over 2000 contractors have lost work in there.”

“J and JF (the same person I think). How would you like your pay cut? have you seen the conditions these workers have to work in ?and they are all skilled people that have been there for years. They are also part of an industry that should be respected and kept going. I am not an empolyee of Corus but know many workers there. Fight for your rights as you deserve it!”

“Why are you so bitter J? Not everyone working for Corus earns a good wage. Ever thought that the bonus helps those people not fortunate enough to be on high salaries to be able to contribute to a deposit for a house?
Have you also considered that not all employees will benefit from the training package from the WAG?
Have you given any thought to what impact the loss of thousands of jobs would do to the South Wales community? Shutting down Port Talbot would lead to massive ecomonic downturn affecting the wider community not just Port Talbot.
I would hope that people external to Corus would be able to see what has happened to Corus since being taken over by Tata - stopping the final salary pension for new starters, suspension of bonus, compulsory shut downs while not forgetting about all those people who have lost their jobs. My concern is what will happen next move-over the suspension / loss of a bonus. Attacking Corus staff is insensitive and maybe you should take other factors into consideration. Just a thought....”

“Typical response from a Corus employee. But you cant ignore the fact I'm right. You want everything and more. You take money off the assembly for extra training and to contribute to wages as your jobs are supoosedly under threat, your running at loss hoping the steel your making will be sold soon, instead of stock piling it all around the site. You've had over a million off the welsh assembly to secure your jobs, and now you say you are entitled to your bonus. Tyneside has better converters and an extra blast. I'm sure if Port Talbot can save 250million, then the management in Tyneside could equal and better your achievments. Your arguement is none existant. Count yourself lucky your still working. Keep on pushing TATA and you'll all be on the dole. PS, got a job, thanks.”

“J or JF of Swansea.... are you repeating yourself?
If Corus we to move to Tyneside ( a much less productive/efficeint plant then this would signal the end of many many businesses in South Wales and it would not just be the Corus satff on the dole but they will be joined by another 5 for every Corus job.
Think on and get a job!”

“So basically all the staff at Corus want their cake and eat it. They were awarded a sustantial amount for re-training and improving their skills etc from the welsh assembly as their jobs were supposedly at risk. Now they expect the bonuses to be paid too. Are they taking the P**s?? Extra funding to save your jobs and bonuses on top. Get a grip, count yourselvers lucky you still have jobs in the current climate. If you've put yourself in a situation where you are now relying on this "bonus" then its your own fault. Don't spend what you haven't got till its in your account. NO SYMPATHY, all were here is how hard done by you are. Getting boring now. Maybe Corus will change their minds and move everything up to Tyneside and leave these grabbing leaches to fend for themselves on the dole.”
