Complete smoking ban call
PLAID health spokeswoman Elin Jones has been calling on the Welsh Government not to go ahead with an exemption to the smoking ban for film and TV sets.
Ms Jones asked for the proposed legislation to be brought before the health committee for full scrutiny ahead of an Assembly vote on the matter.
-

She said the smoking ban won widespread support when it was rolled out and that an exemption in the film industry would expose workers to unnecessary risks.
Ms Jones said: "The Party of Wales is committed to protecting the health of our nation, and exempting individuals from this ban is not the way to go about that."

“@ mw0cnd:"I had to watch a family member die because they smoked..."
It was their choice to smoke. No one forced them.
The risks have been known for many years. They could have given up if they were concerned about their health. Many people continue to want to smoke even though they are ill. Whether we think it is right or wrong, it is their prerogative to do so.
I am sure you have known about the risks of smoking yourself. Would it be partly your responsibility as a family member to not try and have helped them give up?”

“People on here talk about freedom of choice. What about the freedom of choice of families who's family members die through cancers because of smoking what choice did they have. Take myself I had to watch a family member die because they smoked they contracted throat cancer had to have their voice box cut out knowing they couldn't speak ever again then go thought chemotherapy with tubes stuck in their throat just to feed themselves knew that they could never eat solid foods ever again .then I had to watch them die in AGONY in front of me over 3 months go from a strapping 16 stone down to under 4 stone and die just because of smoking YES! SOME NEVER GET ILL BUT LATER ON IN LIFE THEY WILL! IF THEY SMOKE THEY WILL CONTRACT SOME SMOKING ILLNESS. AND GOD HELP THEM. I FOR ONE WOULD LOVE TO SEE A Complete smoking ban .”

“I never smoked but I often wonder what happened to freedom of choice. I just happen to believe that if you fall ill due to smoking, drinking or drugs you should commit to giving them up entirely before treatment or have to pay back the cost of treatment if you don't.
It's one of life's ironies that healthy pastimes can also cause illness. I used to have an active job and played sport regularly til past 40 and now I'm retired through ill health, riddled with arthritis, down to my lifestyle they said!! Some smokers, drinkers or druggies never get ill.”

“Haven't they heard of the e-cigarette?
I am a lifelong non smoker but don't agree with the ban in its current form. A total blanket ban is not a democratic solution eg. pubs should be allowed to be smoking or non smoking, or have smoking & non smoking bars/rooms. It is pathetic that smokers should be made to stand out in all weathers. The smoking ban has had a huge adverse effect on the pub trade, far more than supermarket competion, contributing to the destruction of close knit communities. Not much point in me going down the pub anymore as invariably I will have the bar to myself. Of course there are negative health implications but I could list you a dozen + more activities that fall into that category.”

“There should be no smoking in the workplace, no exemptions, come on plaid lets get rid of this filthy habit once and for all. Smokers are dying off quicker than new recruits are coming alone, not much longer and this filth will be removed for good”

“@ JerryLew: "Rubbish story for the benefit of a very small minority. Reading/looking at the story - why not ban eating crisps...."
This from the same person who hysterically shouts about, " the misery this drug does to individuals, families and friends....and How much does this drug cost the economy?" with regard to mephedrone.(Wednesday, October 10 2012, 10:24PM)
Nicotine is far more of a problem to society as a whole than designer drugs ever will be and I suggest you check your double standards before posting hysterical inaccuracies again sir, lest you portray oneself as a fool”

“It's about smoking in the workplace.
Workers on film and TV sets are occasionally required to be in the presence of an actor who is smoking as part of a scene.
Often the cigarette does not contain tobacco but, the smoke from burning leaves from any plant can be carcinogenic.
California has very strict no smoking laws yet you will often see film and TV actors, in Hollywood studios, puffing away because the character they are playing is that type of person.”
