Complaints are not anti-NHS

CLAIMS by a member of the Community Health Council (CHC) that there is an epidemic of bedsores among patients in Swansea hospitals has produced a large and mixed response.

Some people have strongly criticised the CHC for voicing their concern, and this newspaper for providing publicity for those concerns.

They argue that because complaints by their nature are unproven allegations, we should not report them.

The Post profoundly disagrees with this point of view. We remain convinced that the very existence of these complaints is a matter of public interest.

Our stance is simple: the NHS exists to serve the people, not the other way around. Some of those who have chosen to attack the CHC (and by association this newspaper) would do well to recognise this fact.

Their denial of any problem has in itself prompted more people to come forward with their own stories of apparent neglect and lack of proper nursing care.

Is every complaint to be dismissed as being part of some anti-NHS plot?

Ludicrous, and insulting to angry families.

Fine. Carry on Nurse EP. I doubt that you would print unproven allegations about a private hospital because, they can and will sue you.”
