He is said to have made the decision to switch to the Lib Debs following the party's recent stance on the Ghurkha residency issue.
Councillor Lewis, who was installed recently as Deputy Lord Mayor for Swansea, said: "Many former Conservatives are joining the Lib Dems in Swansea — I have myself signed up more than 70 people who have been long standing supporters of mine as new members of the Liberal Democrats over the last month."

“The E.P. headlines (Colourful Councillor) Is this a E.P.joke with reference to the coat of many political colours he has belonged to.”

“It would seem to me that a very small and overly vocal minority has nothing better to do, than post negative comments against a man that has served the people of Gower for the last 20+ years.
If half the things posted here had any element of truth, do you really think he would be voted in time and time again?
@Puzzled, what would be the point of Mr. Lewis standing down? So people could vote him back in again?
The people of Gower know when they are onto a good thing.”

“well if he stands for the tories and be Elected them crosses over as a Lib-dem, he should stand down, thats what the people in his ward voted for a Tory. not a LIB-DEM. THE Tories are Jumping off a sinking ship now in light of the Gov pay lists.”

“Richard Lewis has been outspoken on various issues - but that is to his credit. Surely it is better to have outspoken elected councillors rather than ones who just unthinkingly tow a "party line" all the time?
The Lib Dems will benefit from him joining them and I know the Tories have been trying to get him to join them for the last couple of years.... so they can hardly now call him all the names under the sun as they have been doing through thier online comments.
I even heard that Labour asked him to join them last year - so lets get real about this. Richard has his own mind and has decided to jion the Lib Dems - good on him!”

“I am not surprise that Richard Lewis is joining the Lib/Dem's, all these councillors in the Lib/Dem and alliance are getting well paid jobs on either the cabinet or some committee, was it not Chris Holley who proposed him for Deputy Lord Mayor? Richard to use the Gurkhas as a reason to switch party's is an insult to the intelligence of Swansea.”

“I fear for the future of the Liberal Democrats in Swansea.
Who can take them seriously when the welcome Richard Lewis into their ranks.”

“Along with those others who allow themselves to seek/have sought election for Councils/ Assembly etc.,I have no objection to those who criticse me, or those others. However I despise those who criticise hiding beneath the cloak of secrecy....."anonymity"!
As for Cllr. Richard Lewis' reason for jopining the Lib Dems., it does sound plausible, but actually knowing him, his reason would be better suited had it exited from the rear end of a bull!”

“Can anyone tell me why politicians are allowed to switrch parties without standing down and forcing and election ? Voters did not vote for a LIb Dem councillor but now one has been thrust upon them. Rules should prevent this type of switching by politicians at all levels.”
