Christmas party receives donation from Tata Steel
CHRISTMAS cheer will be on its way to a festive party thanks to a kindhearted Port Talbot employer.
Tata Steel has contributed towards a children's Christmas party to be held in Ysgol Maes Y Coed School, organised by nurses from the children's community nursing team.
The children's community nursing team (CCNT), is based in Neath Port Talbot Hospital, and provides care to children and young people in their own homes across Port Talbot, Swansea and Bridgend, some of who are life-limited.
Nursery nurses Natalie Cummings and Nicola Lewis wrote to Tata Steel asking for a donation to help contribute to the Christmas party.
The party will be held on December 1 at the Bryncoch school for the ninth year running.
Between 50 and 80 children are expected to attend from the Neath Port Talbot, Swansea and Bridgend areas, along with their siblings and family members.
Ms Lewis said: "The party is a great way to get together and celebrate the start of the festive season for these children with complex health needs, some of which are life limiting.
"We are eternally grateful for the donation, it means a lot sincerely."
Ms Cummings, who is one of the 43 nursery nurses working in the CCNT, said they asked for a contribution in the form of raffle prizes.
Tata Steel responded to the letter by providing vouchers from the Smyths toystore.
The vouchers will be used to buy toys and treats, with the majority being distributed among the children at the Christmas party.
The rest will be kept for the children who have appointments with the blood clinic, as a reward for having their blood taken.
The Christmas party is mainly sponsored by the Starlight foundation which provide the sensory party bags, disco and food.
However, the nurses rely on local fundraising for the children's presents, in the form of hospital cake sales and writing to local businesses like Tata Steel.
Community relations officer at Tata Steel, Nia Singleton, said: "As part of our 'future generations' programme we look to support local children with donations and help in kind, and when we received Natalie and Nicola's letter we were only too happy to help them with a donation of vouchers, to spread that little bit of festive cheer for the children in the local areas!
"I know they will all have a ball!"
