Changes planned for car tax
MOTORISTS could no longer have to provide a motor insurance certificate when buying a tax disc under plans unveiled by Roads Minister Stephen Hammond.
The Government hopes an extra 600,000 motorists a year will be able to tax their car online.
-

The news comes as the DVLA, which employs more than 5,000 people in Swansea, works to close its 39 regional offices in order to save millions of pounds and allow more people to use services online.
Consultation for the plans ends on November 26.

“We already pay 'car tax' with our fuel. Almost £1 a litre of it. The more you drive, the more tax your pay. Bit of a joke when you consider the bright boys in government are obsessed with road charging, when we've already got it.
Increasing fuel duty won't cause the DVLA to close. The DVLA will still be required to keep a track of vehicle ownership and ensure they are insured and MOT'd. I'm convinced a charge will be required to keep their records up to date. Over time the charge will certainly increase and before you know it, we'll be paying much the same as we do now.”

“On one hand i would like to see car tax moved onto the price of fuel, on the other i wouldn't want to see anyone lose their job in the DVLA, so at the end of the day it's my second hand that comes out on top. Besides one of my children has just started in warwick university, which i shall be driving there and back quite a few times a year.”

“Crikey. The DVLA is in the middle of Swansea and practically everyone around knows someone who works there. So why are people making such fools of themselves over this article?
For the slow of thinking - the DVLA can access the vehicle insurance database - just like the police. Before issuing a tax disc, they check the vehicle is currently insured. If a vehicle isn't on the database, they don't issue a tax disc and no doubt send someone round the check to vehicle out.”

“sambadude - you still need insurance. They will check online, so you don't need to show the certificate.
Why are there so many thickos on here today who can't read and comprehend a simple article?”

“jackswan2012 - the government don't put people n the dole. The people do that themselves. Plenty of jobs out there but some people are too lazy to make the effort to find them.”

“When you tax your car you get a disc to place in the window. Why can't the same apply to insurance ? Then everyone could see if the car was insured or not. And if it's not then it could be picked up and crushed. Probably too simple an idea to be considered.”

“@sambadude
This is a confusing article.
They look up the table provided by insurance companies, you have to have insurance whether on the road or off unless you've filled in a SORN.
There's a fine of £80, I think, for not being insured”

“Not sure how allowing people with no insurance to re-tax their car online is going to help anything?”
