GLAMORGAN cricket arrives at St Helen's this week for its annual five-day residency in Swansea.

It's a long way from the ground's glory days when the county carried the pride of Wales onto the field against major touring teams like Australia.

We can look back with nostalgia to those matches played out in front of packed stands. But the development of the Swalec Stadium at Sophia Gardens as a Test arena means those days are never going to return.

There was a lively debate in these pages last week about the need for Swansea to carve out a distinctive role for itself, rather than compete with — and be overshadowed by — the capital city.

St Helen's, 30 years past its sell-by date, is no competition for the Swalec. Perhaps it is time to bring down the curtain at the old ground and find a new use for this historic site.

It could be a wonderful location for an aquarium — something Cardiff has not got — which would be a valuable addition to the city's tourist attractions.
