Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Douglas confirm split
CATHERINE Zeta Jones is spending time apart from husband Michael Douglas, their publicist has confirmed.
The Swansea beauty has been married to the actor for 13 years, making them one of the most powerful couples in Hollywood.
A statement was released to the Evening Post via their publicist on Wednesday after reports their marriage had hit the rocks.
The couple, who have two children, were last pictured together on the red carpet in April.
They are currently thousands of miles apart.
Douglas is holidaying in Sardinia, while 43-year-old Catherine remains in New York.
A representative said: "Catherine and Michael are taking some time apart to evaluate and work on their marriage.
"There will be no further comment."
Rumours have circulated for a number of days, with sources telling American magazines that they were taking a break.
The couple, who married in 2000, were last seem publicly together at the 40th Annual Chaplin Award Gala.
They are said to have decided to spend some time alone after Douglas returned from this year's Cannes Film Festival in France.
The couple, aged 68 and 43, have two children Dylan, 13, and Carys, 10.
Rumours of separation have seen circulating since February, when the American tabloid The Enquirer claimed they were to have a secret divorce.
The pair denied the claims. Both have not been without their health problems over the past few years.
The family has had the pressure of dealing with Michael's battle with cancer, while Catherine has publicly revealed her struggle with bipolar II disorder, which she was first treated for in 2011.
She underwent another stint in rehab in April, in her continued effort to manage the illness.
Michael, meanwhile, revealed he was suffering from stage IV throat cancer in August 2010 - he underwent treatment and in January the following year publicly declared the tumour had gone.
Oscar-winner Catherine is currently starring alongside Bruce Willis in action film Red 2.
