Carnival draws crowds
BANCYFELIN'S recent annual carnival was a great success, bolstered by glorious sunshine.
More than 100 residents of the village lined the streets on July 3 to see the colourful and topical floats, which included winning entry The Fox and Hound's Icelandic volcano, complete with puffs of smoke and a snowy blizzard.
Other floats were equally up to date, with a Gulf of Mexico oil spill — complete with oily water, and a one-year-on celebration of Ffos Las racecourse.
The carnival, organised by Bancyfelin Village Hall Management Committee, kicked-off with a parade through the village by the Carmarthen Twirlers at 1.45pm and the carnival floats.
Carnival Queen Alisha-Jo Edwards was joined by Rose Queen Mai Davies, Fairy Queen Hannah Harvey, Prince Consort Ben Davies and Prince Charming James Nicholson
Judging took place in the village hall car park, with Mayor of St Clears Mark Davies and Mayoress Helen Davies as special guests and judges.
Other judges were former Welsh rugby captain Dewi Thomas and his wife and Lyn, and Ann "Brechfa" Jones.
The whole event was accompanied by commentary by community council chairman Gethin Davies, who also joined the parade in his vintage tractor.
There was an excellent turnout for the sports day, and the marathon was again won by last year's winner Richard Thomas, of Gwenallt Farm, who was presented with a silver 1920s prize cup recently rediscovered by local resident Dolcie Davies.
Many of the walkers also got in to the spirit of the day, including a group dressing as all the characters from Alice In Wonderland, and staff from nearby Werndale Hospital offering free health checks.
Hall committee secretary Bruce Wallace said: "The community support was tremendous, everybody was in the street, I've never seen so many people."
