"It's left the village and the community really shocked," she said.

Mr and Mrs Fagen were killed when their car was involved in the pile-up last Tuesday afternoon.

Seven other people were injured in the crash and had to be cut from the wreckage of their vehicles by firefighters.

The couple had lived in the village for around 25 years and were well-known and respected by the small community.

Mrs Edwards added that the couple would often be seen out walking along the country lanes and would readily stop for a talk.

"This is only a small community — we're all speechless with shock," she added.

"It's all happened so suddenly. They were lovely people. I am going to miss them so much."

Another neighbour, Lindsay Halton, said: "They were really nice people and played a prominent part in the village life.

"We'd see Gerry most days, out walking. They will be really missed in the village. It's small place and they were a big part of it."

His thoughts were echoed by Ben Armstrong, who said he would often see Gerry, as he came up the hill by their house and would stop for a chat or tell an anecdote.

"It's really sad news," he said. "They were pleasant people and they welcomed us when we first moved here. It's just such a shock."

The couple had been returning home when they were involved in the collision on the A40 road between Llandeilo and Carmarthen.

The crash happened at around 4.30pm on a straight stretch of road about a mile from the Dyslwyn junction.

The exact cause of the crash is still being investigated by the police, who have issued an appeal for any witnesses to come forward.

An inquest into the deaths of Mr and Mrs Fagen will be held in due course.

The police confirmed that their silver Vauxhall car was hit several times by the other vehicles and the couple were pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or was driving on the road that day can call police on 101.
