THE director of a Carmarthen theatre group has paid tribute to stage and television actor Richard Briers, who passed away on Sunday.

Sian Morris, director of Just Good Friends theatre group described Briers — famed for roles in BBC comedy series The Good Life and Ever Decreasing Circles — as a lovely man.

She remembers his telephone call to her when he agreed to be the group's president for 2006.

Mrs Morris said: "We were doing a production of By Jeeves at the Civic Hall in Carmarthen and approached Richard Briers who had recorded the PG Wodehouse stories for the BBC, on which By Jeeves is based.

"We were delighted to hear from him and that he would be pleased to support us as president for that year.

"He was lovely and called me straight after I contacted his agent."

She added: "I didn't expect him to call me, but he was interested in our production and spoke about the lead role and how much he enjoyed playing it.

"He also passed on a message of support to our leading man who was playing the same role as he had."

Mrs Morris had met Briers previously backstage following a Shakespeare production in Cardiff.

She added: "He was well- known for his BBC television shows but he was also an established Shakespearean actor too, which some people may not have known.

"It is so sad about his death and we at Just Good Friends will remember him fondly."
