Carers' chance to recharge batteries
CARERS in Swansea are being given the chance to recharge their batteries with new sessions.
New sessions at Swansea Carers' Centre in Mansel Street will help people deal with the stresses and strains of looking after a loved one.
They start this month and will give carers a chance to learn different ways to cope while socialising with others in similar situations.
Outreach worker Delyth Rees said: "As a carer you may find yourself to be in a situation that places you under increased stress.

"There may be many responsibilities and frustrations for you to cope with, and feelings of anger and hopelessness are not uncommon."
She added: "We were asked to do the follow-up sessions for people who take our initial stress control course.
"People who are carers often don't recognise themselves as such and we really want people to know there is support available if they are looking after any family member."
Carer Janice Beynon said: "The course taught us some useful techniques and exercises to combat stress that were easy to understand and carry out.
"It was a very helpful course for anyone, and it is aimed at positive outcomes."
The carers' centre is supported by social services.

“In order for carers to attend activities, workshops, training and groups with us we are often able to offer respite support. We understand that it can be difficult for carers to leave the person they are caring for. If you have any further questions please give us a ring at Swansea Carers' Centre 01792 653344.”

“This sounds like a good idea but who stands in for the carer whilst he/she is taking part in these sessions? Or is the patient left alone for a couple of hours or so? Presumably, there is some back-up for the carer in these situations as not all carers have family/friends who can take over the caring duties....?”
