IT'S official: madcap charity fund-raiser and no-hoper politician, Captain Beany, has been crowned British Eccentric of the Year 2009.

At a glittering April Fool's Day ceremony in London's Mayfair, the Port Talbot caped crusader beat the English at their own game on their home turf.

The sight for sore eyes beat off three English eccentrics to take the title "Greatest British Eccentric 2009", awarded by the members of the Eccentric Club of Great Britain in the Arts Club in Dover Street, Mayfair.

Nominees for the contest were suggested by the members of the Eccentric Club Committee. Apart from some well-known eccentrics like Captain Beany, the nomination list also included Vivienne Westwood, Lord Bath and Sebastian Horsley, who have fascinated the public with their views or conduct, considered by many exceptionally original or even somewhat eccentric.

Captain Beany said:

"I am completely overcome to receive this award. The fact that the English Eccentric of the Year is a Welshman makes me laugh out loud but I beat them fair and square on their home turf. Yoo-hoo!"

“Captain Beany or Barry as he his known to us at Baglan Community Church has been an inspiration to us all.He has raised over £100,000 in charity money over the years and is one of the most friendly and likable people you could ever meet. He has not always had happiness in his life and has had many personal problems over the years. But he has now changed his life around for the better .He has become a born again Christian at our church. And we love him as Captain Beany or Just plain Barry Kirk. The guy is a hero in our eyes.”

“Jim, your puns are awful, not funny awful, just bad.

First line of "welshy's" comment involving the 'has bean' line, is a good pun.

If you're going to do it Jim, put some effort into it and do it well.”

“yea I agree he is annoying and a has bean, there are other people on that list who are much more deserving than captain beany. Ive been harrassed by him too, more than once. I know some people are tight and dont want to part with their money but if someone really hasnt got any change should they be made to look tight and after all some people may already be supporting a charity or even if they are just being tight, it is their money.
The last time I was approached by captain beany I'd already learned not to try and avoid him and when I checked my purse, I only had 8p in change and I was sorry I even bothered looking when I was on the recieving end of beany's reaction.
Not only should he get a job but he should try raising some maners for himself in the meantime or should I say bean-time.
The man's a public menace not a superhero and should be brought into line. Good on anyone who raises money for charity but there is a way to conduct yourself in public and verbally attacking people is not the way to go about raising money for charity.”

“why are we not surprised, he made enough fuss about it and had enough publicity. Does this go on his cv and qualify him to go back to work then so we hardworking taxpayers who also raise money for charity wont have to put our hands in our pockets to fund his antics.”
