WATER cannon would be of no use in tackling the disturbances seen across Britain, an expert in policing Northern Ireland riots has said.

Jimmy Spratt, a former head of Northern Ireland's police federation and a former political representative on the region's police scrutiny body, said he was surprised by the calls to deploy the crowd-control device.

The Democratic Unionist said police in Belfast used water cannon to tackle mobs gathered in open locations and in large numbers.

But he argued that trying to use water cannon around commercial centres in London, Manchester or other cities was not feasible. He said: "They are suited to operating in a wide space."

“"1st of all you can't blame the police as their hand's a tied,, , and 2nd- Parents can't Discipline their children, because it will be Called being cruel to the youngster's, and 3rd ,, the Kid's of today seems to know their right's **** But what should happen is bring Discipline back to School's and also bring back the cane, , and also let the parents sort out their own children to a curtain level. as it is now kid's can beat up older people and get away will it, but if we clip ours Kid's around the Ear we go to Jail. and i believe that when the kids are 16 plus we put them in the ARMY for a couple of years and that should Discipline them hopefully,, . . . the first letter that went through just now is that is what will happen to young kids of today if they do not have their head's sorted out,”

    They'd not survive it.
Yes it was akin to Uni. now, very very few could then afford, inasmuch as making friends & camaraderie but really something better suited to modern life would be better with training for a civilian trade rather than a military one.”

“Why not try something positive and suggest something that will work?

We can't shoot them, can't beat them, can't kettle them and now can't use water canons... that leaves pillow fighting, but I bet some poor sod with allergies is going to pipe up about that.

The police are not allowed to be police anymore, give them more money, get some combat training in and ship them out to deal with these kids before the kids take over the country!

dogfa: "I also asked one of the youths-if national service was brought back, then would they support this idea all 3 said they would do it!" - if they would do it voluntarily, what's stopping them?”

“So the Northern Irish say water canon's are not suitable for enclosed space?

Thats fine, we will go to other European countries and ask them for advice then because they now how to work the machines. I suggest Northern Ireland do the same.”

Sarcasm is the lowest form of wit! The only area I know of Upperbank is on Swansea Eastside where Addis used to be.Hardly a place to boast about.
    Manners maketh the man!

    Oystermouth1
Mr Spratt was more than a constable, and was Chairman of the Police Federation in N.Ireland until he retired.
The point I was trying to make is that he had experience of Riots, whether a Constable or Chief Inspector is not important.
The Streets of Tottenham are nothing to compare with the Avenues of Paris.”

    “Gorseboy,

Because you've served in the RUC it doesn't make you an expert at controlling riots, in just the same way a private soldier may not be the best person to head the armed forces.

I find it strange that other countries have success in using water cannon in the streets - look at the French.”

    “Upperbank.
You make a typical comment of this day and age.
The gentleman is Not a fish but a human-being and should be addressed by his title Mr.
That is part of the problem a lack of respect for our Police forces.
I was taught to respect an officer of the law or risk a clip around the ear something they cannot do today sadly.”

“the courts are to lenient with these yobo's that bring mayhem to our streets like we have witnessed these past few days, for small demeanors they've been found guilty of i reckon a day or two in the stocks place in the centres of towns would soon cool their thoughts.”

“Does Spratt think internment and the Diplock courts worked well?”
