Cannabis addict caught with nine bags of drugs after car accident
A CANNABIS addict has appeared in court after he admitted supplying the drug to his step-brother.
David John Bowen, 24, of Aeron Place, Bonymaen was caught out after police found the Class B drug in his pocket following a car accident.
Swansea Magistrates' Court heard the incident happened at about 11.20pm on November 20 last year.
Anwen Evans, prosecuting, said when police attended they noticed an "aroma of cannabis coming from him".
Bowen was searched and police found nine small bags of suspected cannabis in his pocket. He was arrested and his vehicle was searched. A clear plastic bag was uncovered containing a white rock substance which was later identified as cocaine. A search of his home unveiled 22.5g more cannabis.
In police interview Bowen denied any knowledge of the drugs in his pocket and car.
"He said following the accident he was told the car was in danger of fire," said Mrs Evans.
"He said he found the drugs in the glove box and put them in his pocket, he said he didn't know about the white substance. He said he had attended a friend's house to smoke cannabis and one must have left the cannabis in his car."
Bowen's mobile phone was seized by police.
"There were several messages which the prosecution say do relate to drug supply," said Mrs Evans.
The court heard in a second interview Bowen admitted to supplying his step-brother cannabis.
"He said his step-brother would ask for two £20 bags of cannabis every two weeks," said Mrs Evans.
In a separate matter, on June 1, Bowen was caught near the Grand Hotel in Swansea with 1.36g of methadrone. When police stopped him he handed over the Class B drug.
"He said it was meow meow," said Mrs Evans.
Bowen, who has no previous convictions, pleaded guilty to possessing methadrone, cannabis and cocaine, and possessing cannabis with intent to supply.
Gareth Jones, in mitigation, said: "The defendant has had a long standing cannabis addiction going back two years."
Probation officer Jacqueline Hurran, said Bowen had been using in excess of £100 worth of cannabis a week.
"He told me he was employed but lived two separate lives. One of engaging in employment and one where he's indulging himself in drugs," she said.
"He's lived a very productive life and has a good future ahead of him. He's found his interaction with the criminal justice system extremely sobering."
Bowen was sentenced to a 12-month community order with supervision to be directed towards his drug issues. He must also undertake 150 hours unpaid work and pay £85 costs.
