A CHARITY reaching out to the homeless is calling for volunteers and donations so it can help even more people in need.

Caer Las, a social inclusion organisation, has an office based in Swansea and works with the Access Point on The Strand.

Every day homeless people knock on its door. But it also helps people threatened with homelessness.

Homelessness has came back into the spotlight after Swansea City footballer Angel Rangel took food to homeless people on Friday night. The good deed inspired another with burger van owner David Hopkin offering free burgers and hot drinks to those in need.

In a year Caer Las sees around 450 people, but the volume is increasing. Last quarter there was a 40 per cent year-on-year rise.

But with volunteers and more donations, they could spread that help even further.

Business development manager with Caer Las, Dan Jolley, said: "We would love volunteers who could come in, make tea and just have a chat with the people who use the Access Point.

"We want to build relationships with people, and do more to build links."

Donations needed include sleeping bags, and blankets.

Mr Jolley said: "We were really grateful for a pile of blankets we were given last year.

"People were asked to knit squares and they were sown together to make blankets."

Food donations are also welcome, as well as starter packs for people in new accommodation. However, they cannot accept electrical items as they need to be tested.

Support and development worker Lyndsey Hodgkins added: "As well as calling for more donations, we would like to thank anyone that as donated."

If you would like to volunteer to help at Caer Las call 01792 646071 or drop in to the Access Point on The Strand, Swansea. If you would like to donate call 01792 467027 for information.

“Hi there, the number for donations is incorrect, it should be 01792 467024. Thanks, Dan.”
