A PROTEST by a Llandysul family to withdraw their daughter from school — after CCTV cameras were put in the pupils' toilets — has caused a national stir.

Anthony and Tracy White have removed their daughter, Jade, from Ysgol Dyffryn Teifi.

They say the cameras are completely unnecessary and an invasion of pupils' privacy.

The Journal reported their concerns on its website on January 23 and published the story in the paper last week.

Since then, the story has caught the imagination of the nation.

The Journal was asked to report live on Radio 2's Jeremy Vine Show, Radio 5 Live and Radio Wales, for their topical discussion programmes.

National papers which have followed the story include the Daily Mail, The Sun, Daily Mirror, Metro, Guardian and Observer.

TV stations S4C and ITV Wales have also expressed an interest, and the family have taken part in filming.

Mr White said this week he was surprised and pleased with the response.

"I thought it would just go local, but we've been very impressed," he said.

"I don't intend to let this drop until the matter is resolved. What's happening is shocking."

CCTV cameras were installed in the boys' and girls' toilets just before Christmas.

Mr White said many other young people and their parents felt the same way, but would not speak out against the school.

"I am not very impressed with he education authority. They didn't even know about the cameras until I phoned them.

"Since the paper has been involved, they've started backing the school."

Head teacher Aeron Rees said the move was needed to prevent vandalism.

He said: "The cameras have been installed in the best interests of all pupils, and are managed with the utmost regard to child safety."

"Parents expect us to manage known risk factors, and we will not shy away from doing so."
