A SCHEME to rebuild a bridge linking two Swansea Valley villages has finally been completed.

The joint £725,000 project, carried out between Neath Port Talbot and Powys councils, has seen the rebuilding of the Crown Bridge between the villages of Cwmtwrch and Pen Rhiwfawr on the boundary of the two counties.

A structural assessment in 1999 meant a three tonne load limit was imposed on the bridge, forcing heavy load vehicles to take a 10-mile detour.

The former bridge has now been demolished, and replaced with a new steel beamed bridge with reinforced concrete deck.

Neath Port Talbot Council leader Ali Thomas said: "Due to the nature of the work carried out there was unfortunately an inevitable inconvenience for residents."

He added: "I would particularly like to thank those residents who neighbour the bridge for being so tolerant during the construction work."
