Brendan Rodgers' letter to fans: 'Swansea will live in my heart for the rest of my life'
Six days since he was unveiled as the new manager of Liverpool, bringing the curtain down on two fabulous years at the Liberty, Brendan Rodgers asked the Evening Post to print this open letter to Swansea City’s supporters.
THIS is a letter I’d hoped I would not have to write for a long time, and only ever in the event of a unique opportunity.
-

The chance to manage one of the world’s great footballing institutions doesn’t come around very often in a manager’s life and, after two approaches, I have decided to take up the professional challenge.
Before doing so I wanted to leave you my wholehearted thanks and gratitude for a truly memorable period of my life.

My story at Swansea City began nearly two years ago and my mission above anything else was very clear: to inspire the city.
My aim for a legacy was simply to have made Swansea City Football Club an attacking and creative team who were enjoyable to watch, and to make the people of Swansea proud of their great club, city and nation.
In the years ahead, you, the most important people at the club, will decide if I achieved those dreams, but the journey for me has been one I will never forget.
We created history together to become the first Welsh club in the Premier League, and defied all the odds at the same time, and there is no doubt the club will continue to flourish in the coming years.
I have made many friends and I want to thank them all for the support my family and I have received. I want to thank the board of Swansea City for their belief and support and in particular the chairman, Huw Jenkins.
Our working and personal relationship has become strong over the last two years and I’m sad to be leaving such a good man and friend, but I’m also happy knowing that the future of Swansea City couldn’t be in better hands.
The Supporters’ Trust have really opened my eyes to how a successful club can function and I have no doubts your great work will be replicated throughout football in the coming years.
On behalf of my wife and daughter, I want to say a special thank you to the teachers and pupils at St Michael’s School in Llanelli for everything they have done to make her time at school so enjoyable and rewarding.
I want to thank the media in Wales for the respectful way they have gone about their job and in particular to the South Wales Evening Post, who have been sensitive to the personal issues I have had in my social life.
The players at Swansea I will thank individually, but to them I hope I have helped you become better players and people because you have certainly done that for me.
And, finally, to the Jack Army. I’m proud to have been your manager and feel truly blessed for the support you have given me on and off the field.
Your passion both at home and away made me very proud on the touchline.
I leave knowing I couldn’t have given any more to help your great club succeed.
The next manager will come in and look to keep the club moving forward and your support for him will be as important as it was for me to ensure continued success.
Swansea will live in my heart for the rest of my life and one day I would love to return to this great club and city.
Until that day comes, I wish everyone at Swansea lots of success in the next chapter of your amazing story.
Brendan (forever a Jack!)

“Thank you Brenden for the exciting football you gave to our beloved city, where on so many occasions we outplayed some of the Pl top teams-- like all our true supporters i was also so gutted when you decided to leave. Best of luck for your future at Liverpool, though of course i sincerley hope we can find a new manager with your quality's and finish the season above Liverpool.”

“Phil14, excellent post mate, puts things in perspective.
30th May 2011 was the best footballing day of my life bar none, and probably will never to be repeated. Whist I put that down to a complete team effort, would we have been there if we didnt have BR? I know Roberto laid down the foundations but you still have to steer the club in the right direction which is a difficult task.....notice how many of the bigger clubs fail to get out of the championship.
One final thing, notice how much praise BR gives to Huw Jenkins. There stands a man who has been critised previously for not spending etc, but he also has been intrumental in our rise to the prem, and we should be very greatful that we have him.
Finally, thank you BR, for what you have done for us as a club and a city.

“It's a shame we have lost him but thanks have to go to him for getting us where we wanted to be and that is in the Premiership. I would have liked him to stay for just one more season and see what he could have achieved with some more signings to a squad that exceeded all expectations last Season but no-one is bigger than the Club and we move on. Let's hope we now get a good Manager installed by the end of next week who will carry on the philosophy of the passing game that we have received accolades for and that next season we once again get behind the club as we have always done. Good Luck BR but I just hope that you don't live to regret a move to a club that is steeped in tradition but is now being run by the money men who nothing of football and it's traditions and in my view these investors, not only at Liverpool, are eventually going to ruin the beautiful game that we once knew and loved.”

“Hey jackswan2012 & phildavies14 I love your philosophy on being a true Swans supporter.
"Take an Irishman by the name of Rodgers and use his bum fluff to floss your teeth with.
believe everything he says, and live happily ever after." Go Swans!!”

“OzJack, the principles of Moneyball are not financial really, that's just the aspect that got the attention. The real basis of it is statistical analysis, finding out what statistics really distinguish the most successful sides and finding the players to match that.
Of course football is much more complex than baseball, is pass completion really a critical statistic? It's important but the figure alone doesn't state whether the player ever knocked it more than 5 yards, Messi has the worst completion rate at Barca for instance because he tries harder balls. Milage run in a match is great, but highly dependent on formation, style and opposition.”

“Very good post there ozjack, yes I can see the logic of it from the yanks who own Liverpool.
But I can see that people are really taken by the tripe from Brendan in this article, I ask the people here, this may cost us our premier league survival, he has effectively poached Sigurdsson from after he agreed terms, so are you happy with that ? Because for me who have supported the swans for many years all I can see is Brendan Rodgers doing the same kind of spin as Tony Blair!
This is our most important and difficult season, the second season in the premier league sorts out the boys from the men, if we survive it will probably mean we are up here for many years, if we drop it will mean that it was probably a flash in the pan, Rodgers has made survival that much more difficult now. He has caused some chaos at the club when we are in the hardest league in the world. For me the sooner he sods off with his spin the better.”

“Im not a Swansea fan as i was born in Wrecsam , but end of the day YES its not good news that BR has left your club but no person is bigger than your club either . Swansea was there before BR and Swansea will still be there after him . Hopefully Swansea can improve on position in table next season an continue to do Wales proud”

“I wish Brendan Rogers all the best at Liverpool, hes going to need our best wishes, sadly I dont think he is the man for the Liverpool job, and his new owners wont be too long in letting him know. He was the right man for the job here, we were playing the passing football game, thanks to Martinez, that suited his philosophy,he tried to introduce his style at Reading and failed miserably he wasnt even on the bookies list when Huw Jenkins took him on. So the reality is WE, the Swans made him the so called manager of the future.I was one of the supporters at the Blackburn game who sung 'we love our manager' not thinking for a moment that few months later he would desert us, for a team 3 places above us, who havent won the league since 1989...when Martinez left at least it was from the championship to the Premiership.
We,ve been an attractive team to watch since 2008 when Martinez brought in the Spanish players , and introduced their style of play, except then we had the leagues top scorer Scotland 29 goal... last season total 45 ,6th lowest in league..we had 5 players in the PFA team of the year, 2009-10 we missed out of the playoffs by 1 point....so its the team that matter, regardless who is manager, we are in a healthy position thanks to our board and I'm sure the next manager will slot in to OUR system.”

“If someone said 2 years ago, after the BORING must win game versus Doncaster, (when Sousa started with Kuqi up front, brought on Gorka and finally Trundle) that 2 years later we would be in the premier league on the following conditions.
We would appoint a manager who would make the team the most focal point of the club, who would bring back an unhappy Leon Britton, who would take Joe Allen to the next level, who would win plaudits up and down the country for the way we play, who would succeed in the Premier league, but in 2 years later we would lose this manager to the 2nd biggest club in Britain. OF COURSE WE WOULD HAVE TAKEN IT.
Good luck Brendan, you go with the blessing of the most of Swansea, except the imbeciles.”
