Brendan: Kemy may be ideal man
BRENDAN Rodgers has admitted Kemy Agustien has "everything Swansea City would look for" as the trialist midfielder continues his bid for a Liberty Stadium contract.
Agustien says he would love a second crack at English football with Swansea after losing his way over the last 18 months in his native Holland.
And while Rodgers is yet to decide on whether to offer Agustien a chance, he has given the gifted 23-year-old a glowing reference.
"He has got attributes that can take him to the highest level in England," the Swansea manager said.
"He is mobile, he gets about the pitch well, he is strong and he is a good player with the ball at his feet.
"He has everything we would look for in terms of the type of player who could play for Swansea.
"Technically he is strong, tactically he understands the game and physically he can deal with the game in England. How he is mentally is what we are finding out."
Agustien has played a full part in Swansea's Dutch tour after being told he can leave Eredivisie side AZ Alkmaar on a free transfer.
Having begun his career at Willem II, he joined AZ in 2006 but has since had spells on loan with Roda JC, Birmingham City and RKC Waalwijk.
A proposed £2.5 million permanent move to the Midlands collapsed because Agustien suffered groin problems, and he has had some minor off-field troubles since returning home.
"It's not just about getting good players, it's about getting the right players," Rodgers pointed out.
"But Kemy has impressed me and the rest of the coaching staff, and he has mixed in well with the players.
"You can see he is a talent and the good thing is that he understands the way we play."
A former Dutch Under-21 international, Agustien played at national level alongside the likes of Ibrahim Afellay, Gregory van der Wiel and Eljero Elia, all of whom featured at the World Cup this summer.
And Agustien reckons he might also have been in South Africa had his career followed a smoother path.
"I think if I had made good choices in the past and had no injuries, I might have been playing at that level," he said.
"But I cannot think about that right now. Right now I just want to play football and, if I can do that at Swansea, that will be great.
"The guys have taken me in like one of their players and I have enjoyed being with Swansea.
"I enjoy the way they play and I enjoy the players and the staff, so hopefully I can stay longer than just this week."
Rodgers is likely to take a further look at Agustien in tomorrow's friendly against ADO Den Haag, the flagship game of the tour.
Swansea need at least one new face in central midfield having lost Leon Britton to Sheffield United, and Agustien seems happiest in the holding role which is now up for grabs.
"I would like to come back to English football," he added.
"Playing for Birmingham was a great experience, although I had two operations on my groin so that was not good.
"I was disappointed when I didn't sign permanently for Birmingham. I think the Premier League would have been more suited to my game because the Championship is more power, power, power.
"But that's why I like Swansea, because they try to play football. I think if they gave me a chance, I would take it with both hands."
