THE Brainiacs came out top at the second annual quiz held between competing schools in the Swansea Valley.

The team from Birchgrove beat others made up of pupils from schools Cwmtawe, Cefn Hengoed, and runners-up Maesydderwen.

The event was organised by service organisation Glantawe Lions, which helps to arrange projects aimed at improving life for people living in the Swansea Valley, and involved teams of up to six key stage three-aged pupils.

Cwmtawe school, which won the inaugural event last year, hosted the competition. A Glantawe Lions spokesman said: "Many thanks go out to Cwmtawe Community School for both hosting the quiz and having gone to the great efforts".

The winners from Birchgrove were presented with an engraved shield which they will keep for a year until next year's quiz. The first and second place pupils also received a shield for their efforts.

The event was attended by Glantawe Lions Club vice-president Jackie Warren, while quizmaster was Brendan Sweeney.
