Family pay tribute to tragic five-year-old bike racer
THE five-year-old boy killed on a child’s motorcycle has been described as a beacon of joy by his family.
Jake Wilson was understood to have been with his father Robert when he fell off the mini-motorcycle.
Dyfed-Powys Police said there were no suspicious circumstances and have described it as a tragic accident.
A spokesman said a post mortem had shown Jake had died as a result of head injuries. He was wearing a crash helmet at the time of the incident.
A statement from Jake’s family reads: “Jake Alexander Wilson, aged 5, was tragically killed in a motorcycling accident on Sunday 27th of December 2009.
“Jake was an experienced motorcycle rider, winning all three club championships in the Welsh grasstrack calendar in 2009.
“Jake was a loveable, affectionate and fun loving boy who packed so much into his short life.
“His family are struggling to come to terms with the tragic and heartbreaking loss of their youngest child.
“Jake will be greatly missed by all his family including his older brother and sister.
“He will be remembered as a beacon of joy by everyone whose lives he touched. He will leave a great void in the lives of the family.”
The emergency services were called to an access road alongside the market, near the Nantyci showground, at 3.30pm on Sunday. The boy was taken to Glangwili Hospital but later died from his injuries.
Jake was a pupil at Carmarthen's Richmond Park Primary School.
He lived with parents Robert and Tracey, together with his older brother and sister at Llys Caermedi in Carmarthen.
Neighbours last night spoke of their shock over the death.
One neighbour, who wished not to be named, said: "It's just awful. Jake was a lovely little boy and he will be terribly missed."
At the time of the accident, the Carmarthen Canine Society Open Show was being held at the showground.
Treasurer at the showground, Ellis Davies, said the first staff at the event knew of the incident was when they heard the emergency services arriving at the livestock centre.
He said it was a terrible tragedy.
Mr Davies added: "The show was ongoing at the time and the first we all knew was when we saw the police and ambulance.
"That is as much as we know but it is an awful thing to have happened, and our thoughts and sympathies are with the family."
Jake claimed a clean sweep of trophies in his first year of racing, taking all three championships in the Welsh grasstrack calendar.
He was also named most improved rider of 2009 by the Bancyfelin Grasstrack Club, near Carmarthen.
Leave your Lasting Tribute to Jake Wilson
The Austrian-made KTM 50 SX bike Jake was riding is described by manufacturers as "the ultimate weapon for budding professional motocross racers."
The gearless machine, coting around £2,000, is specially designed for cross-country tracks.
Prayers will be said for Jake at his school, Richmond Park Primary in Carmarthen, when children return from the Christmas break next week.
