Birthday celebration as hotel hits a landmark
IT has been a Swansea landmark for half a century — and now staff and customers past and present of the Dragon Hotel have joined together to celebrate its birthday.
When the Kingsway hotel opened to the public in 1961 it was one of the city centre's first post Second World War developments. It still boasts several loyal members of staff who have worked there since shortly after it opened five decades ago.
During the 1990's its new owners renamed it The Forte — a move which was criticised by civic leaders and the Wales Tourist Board for its lack of Welsh identity — before it became a Holiday Inn, and then in 2005 it was sold once more to the London and Devonshire Trust, who returned it to its original and rightful name.
General manager Tim Priestland said: "To have reached our 50th birthday, and to once again be operating as an independent hotel, is a real achievement, and can only be attributed to the sheer hard work, enthusiasm and commitment of our staff over the past 50 years, and the fondness held for the hotel by the public who have really taken it into their hearts."
