MORE than 1,100 cyclists took part in British Heart Foundation Cymru's South Wales Bike Ride on Sunday.

Starting at the Swansea Recreational Ground, routes took cyclists around Swansea and the Gower Peninsula in what was a fun day for all the family.

Event organiser Hannah Townsend said: "We had a great time on Sunday. The turnout was great and although it wasn't sunny the rain held off in the morning. I would like to thank everyone who took part, everyone who supported our riders and all of our volunteers. Without your support, we could not continue our vital work in to beating heart disease."

It is hoped the event, which was supported by supported by Santander, will raise £50,000 to help the BHF in the fight against heart disease.

“Just a note in reply to the comment above, and thanks for your comment. I am the Event Organiser for the British Heart Foundation (BHF)'s South Wales Bike Ride. We make every effort to ensure cyclists at this event adhere to the rules of the road. We send out a copy of the rules with every registration pack and have the rules displayed at the start in order to encourage cyclists to be considerate to other road users whilst being a part of this event. Unfortunately we are unable to manage their behaviour at all points along the route. We also have great support from South Wales Police who are there to ensure the safety of riders and work in conjunction with the other emergency services at this event to make it a success. We are grateful for all the continued support and are looking forward to next year's event.”

“As good a cause as it is, the organisers (and police) need to monitor participants a bit more closely. Driving between Pontarddulais and Grovesend yesterday I was trying to pass two cyslists who were hogging the entire width of the carriageway, both travelling with both their hands on their hips like two schoolkids showing off. They seemed intent on not letting me through. A couple of minutes later I came across a group of eight cyclists riding four abreast all chatting and laughing, casting an eye back at me but definately intent on not giving way. In both these instances all the cyclists were "dressed to kill" in their flashy gear so I assume they were seasoned cyclists. I was too focussed on watching the road to be able to note the numbers on their backs or to take photographs in evidence. I had previously passed a police vehicle parked (next to the chippy!) by King Hotel, where they were sat most comfortably, and where they still remained when I returned some 90 minutes later.
When my wife arrived home evening time, having set off just before me in the morning, the first thing she commented on was the frustration of trying to drive past reckless cyclists who showed no consideration for other road users, so I guess a lot of drivers had similar experience.
Interestingly there were many other "ordinary" cyclists (in their own clothes with no numbers) on the road too, but in all instances they were mindful and considerate and not displaying the arrogance of the show offs. Plain to see which section of the cycling community gives this particular mode of transport a bad name.”
