Big drop in bag usage
CARRIER bag use in Wales has been cut by as much as 96 per cent in some retail sectors since the introduction of a 5p charge.
Environment Minister John Griffiths has said he can see no reason why the charge would not work elsewhere in the UK.
Mr Griffiths said: "I think the Welsh experience proves that if you want to effectively reduce carrier bag use, a charge really is the best way to go."
He said the efforts of retailers and shoppers had been key to the scheme's success, adding: "I can see no reason why the charge wouldn't work just as well in other parts of the UK."

“I fail to see why you carrying a weight so heavy you struggled with it and hurt yourself is anyone's fault other than your own. I don't know what your job is but obviously you never had a manual handling course.
Here's a tip, before lifting something check the weight, if it's too heavy for you then break the load down.
The cost to the NHS is your fault, not the Labour party's.
I too was sceptical but it is far better not seeing plastic bags blowing around and it's not hard work to re-use them.”

“Cynically,Were you too stupid to take items out of the boxes delivered to you'r door and carry them seperately to the kitchen? I was'nt all that in favour in the first place but i live near tesco's and to walk past and not to see plastic bags hanging from the trees and blowing up my street has changed my mind. In my opinion it is only selfish people who would think it was'nt a good idea”

“Cynically
Change to a supermarket that offers to carry the delivery to your kitchen.”

“Mr Griffiths may appear very smug over this stupid policy, thanks to the good old Labour party's policy, I have to carry my shopping delivery from my front door to the kitchen in the heavy delivery boxes, as the jobsworth welsh labour have decided to put yet another stealth tax on us all in the name of helping the environment. This resulted in a trip to Casualty in absolute agony with a trapped nerve due to damage to my neck after carrying these heavy boxes, 5 months on I am still struggling to do my job, but due to the good old labour party's fantastic policy, I am now costing the NHS a small fortune. Not so cost effective now is it Mr Griffiths!”
