A SCARLETS legend has welcomed plans to celebrate Llanelli's sporting history with a new rugby memorial.

Phil Bennett has backed a move by Carmarthenshire Council to use the second set of goalposts from the pitch at Stradey Park as a prominent landmark at Sandy Water Park.

The authority plans to site two life-sized rugby players, painted in team colours, at the base of the posts, which will depict the Scarlets running towards the try line, with an All Black player tackling. Mr Bennett, current Scarlets president, said: "The posts are a great idea, anything that can still keep the identity of Llanelli alive and preserve the history of the Scarlets is wonderful.

"For those coming from far and wide it may be a talking point and a way to remember the days of Stradey Park."
