AN animal rights activist jailed for 11 years has come under fierce criticism following her insistence she has done nothing wrong.

Heather Nicholson was sent to prison for a blackmail plot against a controversial science laboratory.

Nicholson feels she does not deserve to be locked up with child- killers such as Rose West at the top security prison Bronzefield.

But scores of Evening Post website readers say they are incensed by the former RSPCA worker's complaint of rough justice.

Jack Churchill, of Swansea, said: "Whether or not it was for the good of the animals is not the issue, she has no respect for human beings. Keep her in 'til she see the error of her ways."

While Jim Sheridan, also of Swansea, added: "Would the likes of Ms Nicholson be happy if some of the staff at Huntingdon Life Sciences suffered from depression? The court went through due process accordingly."

Nicholson was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court last week.

The jury decided the 41-year-old was the ring-leader of campaign group Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty (SHAC).

From 2001 to 2007, managers of firms associated with the testing lab received hoax bombs and letters threatening violence. They were also the subject of paedophile smears.

The cost of the damage and increased security measures was said to be £12.6 million.

Jailing Nicholson and the six other campaigners, Mr Justice Butterfield said what the group did amounted to "urban terrorism".

But her parents spoke to the Post on Saturday, praising their daughter's strong conviction and principles.

Dad George Barwick, aged 73, said: "There are rapists and murderers who get lesser sentences than Heather did. Her sentence is grotesquely unjust."

And Nicholson echoed her father's view in an interview with a Sunday paper, saying: "I have never hit or attacked anyone.

"We were right to take a stand against big business torturing animals for profit."

But scores of Post readers begged to differ via our website. However, others were more sympathetic.

Mike King, of Port Talbot, wrote: "Shannon Matthews's mother received a prison sentence of eight years, yet this poor girl who was standing up against the vermin at Huntingdon gets 11? Makes me sick."

“11 years in jail is an appallingly unjust sentence. Many of you have cats and dogs, just think of them kept in barren pens year after year, and submitted to terrible experiments, often without any anaesthetics. Child rapists don't even get 11 years for their appalling crimes. As Ghandi once said, "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated."”

“n this same paper a financial advisor was jailed for 4 years for ruining the lives of pensioners, friends and others who trusted him by defrauding them out of their life savings:Works out at £112',5OO a year [ tax free] More if his "good behaviour"undoubtedly frees him earlier. Compare this with the outrageous 11 years given to that poor girl whose only crime is compassion. This stinks of politics and big business. And to those who think otherwise I say; stop for a moment and imagine how YOU would feel if your stomach were force pumped full of air, just to see how long it would be before you started screaming, yes, this has been done.”

“A Baroness stood up in the House of Lords and called the 'animal rights ' activists MURDEROUS THUGS,(this is in Hansard) as an activist myself I wrote to challengs her, asking who we had murdered, the eventual reply came (after a second letter)to say that that was not what the honorable(?) lady meant. My third letter asked if her statement could be erased? the reply was to threaten that if I wrote again I would be reported for HARASSMENT. I still have the letters.”

“HLS terrorize animals, therefore they are the real terrorists. Experiments on animals are worthless. HLS kill 500 beagles a day. They act out of greed and sadism. Thousands of people die because of medicines which act on animals but are lethal to people. There are many interests at work and this why this state of affairs goes on and people are fooled by the media and the Establishment.
Animal rights activists have nothing to gain and all to lose.
They are selfless and brave and one day they'll be hailed as heroes and then justice will have finally been done.”

“I'm requesting that, in fairness in order to see exactly what Heather was campaigning against, this newspaper features an article with details of all the animal cruelty / incompetence / law-breaking inside Huntingdon Life Sciences.

This must include the Uncaged Campaigns 'Diaries of Despair' report which revealed horrific pig-to-primate organ transplants, illegal experiments on primates, 500+ breaches of GLP and much more........... including how government colluded with HLS and Imutran and has desperately covered-up rather than upholding so-called 'strict and rigorous' laws.

All those complaining about being intimidated, scared etc should be directing their moaning at the government, for failing to uphold the law in the first place and supporting HLS no matter the exposes of animal cruelty / incompetence / law-breaking.

Had government not stepped in to prop up HLS it wouldn't have been in business and the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty campaign wouldn't have existed!

Heather has stood up for the innocent and defenceless victims of Huntingdon Life Sciences, everyone who is against exploitation, against oppression, against violence and killing should support her.

Also, as some here have already said, people should remember that back in the day many similarly vilified suffragettes and Spear of the Nation (Umkhonto We Sizwe), Nelson Mandela was similarly called a 'terrorist' and imprisoned for many years, in fact last time I looked he was still on the US proscribed list.

So, how about it 'This is South Wales', will you have balanced and fair reporting and print an article giving the facts of all the documented animal cruelty / incompetence / law-breaking inside HLS and how government has covered-up for years?”

“Actually Jack Swansea the suffragettes used both violent and peaceful methods to achieve their aims - including assaulting people, smashing windows and burning down buildings. And as for waiting for people to do the right thing - how long should people wait? The politicians are propping up the vivisection industry so writing to your mp isn't going to help. And anyway - this is by the by - Heather hasn't been covicted of hurting anyone - she's been convicted of thinking about doing something with someone - literally it's that vague - how is it right she be held responsible for other people's actions? And hhow is her being in prison going to stop those people from doing anything else - it makes no sense other than policial scapegoating!”

    “wayne-swansea.
I think you need to get your facts straight before you go shooting your mouth of about things you know nothing about.
Firstly let me inform you that there have been no human deaths caused by animal rights, but at least 20 death,s of animal rights activists caused during protest,s a few i will also add hunt sabs whose murderers have necer been charged with causing their deaths.
wayne i think you are another charles fron swansea who spouts such hatred, yet where are you when we have demo,s?
You jump on the bandwagon hiding behing your computer when why not go along to a demo to see for yourself, and i will also add that these demo,s are held via the police.
Let us also not forget the pathetic individuals who like to make fun of animal cruelty and these people are staff at HLS.
The type of staff who think nothing of bringing their own dog to work with them, while they are causing cruelty to another dog.
maybe you should go to HLS oneday for yourself wayne, then you will understand exactly what so-called human beings work there.
I have been there outside the gate,s a number of times and everytime the staff drive out they shout out at the torture they have done that day.
so think on wayne when you sit behind your computer and accuse animal rights activists of not thinking twice about human life.
    You are very misguided.”

“Would people PLEASE stop harping on about murderers and rapists getting shorter sentences!!!! This story is discussing this persons wrong doing - it's not a story to start venting on about jail terms.”

“I'm sure the suffragettes never threatened people with their lives, so what we used to think is irrelevant.. there is such a thing as peaceful protest and making people aware of what went on in HLS was, in part done in a peaceful and correct manner, and the good in people would have stopped the cruel practices as intended..

What Heather and her associates carried out was terrorism, she is no martyr to the cause she is a fanatic with misguided principles, she terrorised innocent people, familes, pensioners people in business like the haulage firm who had a contract with HLS, they treatened them with bombs.. they terrorised them... until she can admit that what she done was wrong she deserves to stay in jail...”
