Baby elephant cried for five hours after separation from mum
THE baby elephant pictured here wept for five hours after being separated from his mother for a second time.
Its keepers said he was inconsolable following the separation, forced on them because his mother had twice tried to kill him.
The newborn calf had been stomped on by his mum but keepers at the Shendiaoshan Wild Animal Nature Reserve in Rongcheng, Shandong province, allowed the relationship another chance after believing the incident was accidental.
But it happened a second time, and as a result of the separation the calf cried under a blanket for five straight hours before keepers were able to console him.
“He couldn’t bear to be parted from his mother and it was his mother who was trying to kill him,” a keeper is reported as saying.
Thankfully the calf, named Zhuangzhuang, is understood to have since been adopted by the keeper who rescued him and they have formed a strong bond.
