BLOG: Paul Turner reviews God of War: Ascension on PS3
WHAT'S Good: This is a big game – massive in fact. I'm talking about scale here. But you are a God, so it is hardly surprising I suppose. You are Kratos, captured by the evil furies, but not for long. Soon you will be running, jumping and slaying your way through environments that are about as big as they come. At one moment you will be stood upon a rampart of some sort, the next moment, the rampart you are on is just a single vertebrae in a beast that is part mountain city, part terrifying creature that is out to slay you in one of several gruesome ways. Fortunately, you have plenty of methods to return the favour, with different powers for your blades, multiple combos and spells. There are also puzzles to solve which grow in complexity, and, for the first time, multiplayer.
What's bad: I did feel a little retro when I played this, as the platforming levels are a little old school with lots of running and jumping through environments with the camera swinging behind you with each turn, even if the graphics are far from old fashioned – the opposite in fact. Fighting some of the monsters, while made different by the environments, can also feel a little repetitive, with the same moves required over and over to defeat your foe. And the camera angles are sometimes unhelpful.
