BIG WINNERS SHOWS HOW LUCKY WE ARE
WALES was acclaimed as the second luckiest place in the UK for lottery winners, according to a 2011 study.
By then Wales had seen 179 overnight lotto millionaires created since the lottery was launched — meaning one in every 14,502 of the population had hit the jackpot.
Wales was just pipped to the post as the luckiest spot by the North East of England.
And 2013 has been a good year for lottery winners in the Swansea area.
EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle winners Alan and Jan Parfitt, from Pontardawe, got lucky in May.
It was the third big win in as many months.
David and Susan Nelson (pictured), of Llansamlet, won the same amount the previous month
And in March Loughor couple Tommy and Carol Lisk welcomed £3 million into their lives.
Other big winners in South West Wales have been Llanelli great-grandfather Bob Bradley who scooped £3.5 million and former teacher Mike Staddon, from Penyrheol, Gorseinon, who won £1.3 million.
Couple Ken Henry and Sandra Fosbrooke from Furnace, Llanelli, also bagged £12.8 million.
In 2010 unlucky Gary Davies, from Swansea, was the only one of 12 workmates making Jaguar engines at the Ford plant in Bridgend who decided not to join their Lotto syndicate.
But it proved to be the wrong decision as the other 11 scooped £114,000 shared between them.
But a Swansea life-saver became a real life lucky charm after twice hitting the jackpot.
Paramedic Andrew Vaughan was one of 69 ambulance service workers from five ambulance stations in and around Swansea who won £1million on the EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle in 2012.
The 55-year-old from Townhill was no stranger, though, to winning big after a former syndicate which he ran won £1 million.
Mr Vaughan's former syndicate, which was also made up of paramedics, occasionally won small amounts of money on the National Lottery and that would then be invested into Premium Bonds.
Every month National Savings and Investments, which runs the Premium Bonds, selects one number to win £1 million and, six years ago, the syndicate of 25 won the jackpot.
He said: "Everyone wants to rub me and have a bit of luck from me."
