Awards pay tribute to success of life-savers
THEY support one of Wales's most vital life- saving services.
And the Wales Air Ambulance shop in Swansea is celebrating after its dedicated fundraising efforts — and its manger — were recognised at a national awards ceremony.
Manager Rhian Lewis has received the Highly Commended Award for staff member of the year at the recently held Charity Retail Awards.
The charity's warehouse was also commended in the innovation and retail category at the awards.
Manager Rhian was key to establishing the charity's shop and warehouse in the city — the first of its kind to be used by Wales Air Ambulance.
With a growing number of charity shops across they country, the service needed a large premise to collect, sort, clean and distribute donated goods from.
The items are then distributed across the charity's shops in South Wales, or displayed in the depot's shop.
Chief executive Angela Hughes nominated manager Rhian and the warehouse for the award.
She said: "I am delighted for Rhian and all the staff and volunteers at the warehouse for gaining the recognition they deserve for how hard they all work.
"Rhian is a credit to the charity, and the warehouse has been a fantastic venture, keeping our helicopters in the sky by generating around £3,000 per week."
The charity needs to raise £6 million a year to keep running.
They have three crews based in Swansea, Caernarfon and Welshpool, who are able to get to any accident in Wales in 20 minutes.
