Assault charge carer arrested
COUNCIL bosses are keeping tight-lipped after a social services employee was arrested on suspicion of assaulting a child.
The worker, who is believed to provide home help to frail and vulnerable people in the county, is being investigated by police after her 10-year-old daughter allegedly made a complaint. She has not been charged with any offence.
A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "We have arrested a woman on suspicion of assault.
"She is currently on police bail pending further inquiries."
It is understood the woman is continuing her work in the Neath area despite concerns from some within the authority.
A fellow Neath Port Talbot Council employee said: "A lot of people are very unhappy that she is able to continue working in the circumstances.
"She is looking after adults who basically have the mental capacity of a child and we are concerned.
"I don't know if her boss is aware and obviously in this country we operate with the premise that you are innocent until proven guilty.
"But should she be working with vulnerable people while this allegation is being investigated?"
Despite the seriousness of the allegation, Neath Port Talbot Council is refusing to comment on the case.
Head of strategic personnel Graham Jones said: "There is a legal obligation upon the council to maintain an appropriate level of confidentiality in relation to staffing matters of an individual nature.
"The council is, therefore, unable to provide personal data about any of its employees."
Meanwhile it is understood the woman has been bailed to appear before police on December 5.
