CAN art contribute to regeneration? We are about to find out in High Street.

It goes unremarked that taxpayers' money is regularly spent on renewing infrastructure in the hope a better looking environment will attract private investment.

It is harder to see the connection between private enterprise and giant gold palm trees.

And yet these striking works of art are sending out their own message about a previously neglected part of town.

“There are a number of art initiatives in Swansea who aim to bring contemporary art to a wide viewing audience. LOCWS do a great job in this context. Another initiative , the 15 Hundred Lives Contemporary Art Group had similar aims. 15 Hundred Lives brings accessible contemporary art right into the heart of Swansea and its diverse communities. The group's annual exhibition at The Grand Theatre, which runs until 22 February, has been very well received and supported by the people of Swansea.

Graham Parker, co-founder of 15 Hundred Lives, says:

"Swansea is rapidly establishing itself as the cultural heart of Wales and initiative such as LOCWS and 15 Hundred Lives make that heart beat even stronger."

    Sylvie Evans, co-founder, says:

"Our artists use a wide range of media so everyone should discover something which not only interests them but also allows them to gain a fresh perspective on the world. We hope that the people of Swansea will come to view our work and take the opportunity to have a chat to us.

    Counsellor Erica Kirchner says:

"Exciting times are ahead for the ingenious collective brains behind the 15 Hundred Lives Contemporary Art Group, which has come together in the heart of the city to expose some of the wealth of local emerging artistic talent. Brining these like-minded people together has already brought a buzz to Swansea. This exciting artistic venture is important to the area. Watch this space!"
