Art branches out in Swansea as gallery is refurbished
ART will be spread across Swansea while the city's much-loved Glynn Vivian art gallery is treated to a multi-million pound makeover.
A programme of "off-site" activities is being put together for gallery users so no one misses out while it is closed for its £6million renovation.
Meanwhile, much of the gallery's art collection will be looked after in storage.
Graham Thomas, Swansea Council's cabinet member for culture, recreation and tourism, said: "This major redevelopment scheme will lead to one of the best facilities of its kind in Wales but we're very mindful services should continue to run throughout the temporary closure.
"This is why Glynn Vivian staff are working so hard on an extensive programme of off-site activities that will cater for art fans of all ages while the redevelopment takes place."
From October 30, events and workshops will be made available throughout the closure, including at the YMCA in St Helen's Road, Central Library in the Civic Centre and Swansea Metropolitan's School of Art.
During the closure gallery staff will also be relocated to other Swansea Council offices.
Additionally, from November a public information point will be set up at Central Library so people can find out all about gallery programmes and activities. And a computer which shows and describes all the works of art at the Glynn Vivian will also be moved to Central Library.
At the moment staff are working on modifying a service for schools called 4-site, so essential educational and practical workshops for schoolchildren will continue to be available throughout the closure.
The redevelopment scheme is being funded by the Welsh Government, the Arts Council of Wales and Swansea Council.
When it reopens, the Glynn Vivian will include a new lecture and community room and more space for exhibits.
Structural work will begin in 2012 and it is expected it will take around two years to complete.
A Glynn Vivian leaving party is being organised on Saturday, October 22, from 11am to 7pm to celebrate the latest chapter in the gallery's life.
This will include arts events and activities, a drop-in craft workshop, live music and film.
Mr Thomas added: "We'll do all we can to keep people informed."
