Arrest made in hunt for Swansea tyre slasher

POLICE hunting a serial tyre slasher have made an arrest.

Twenty nine cars have been vandalised in the Uplands area of Swansea in the past two months, with 21 of them being attacked in the past three weeks alone.

Now police investigating the spate of attacks have said they have arrested and charged a 28-year-old man in connection with them.

The man — who has not been named — is due in court later this month.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "Police in Swansea investigating a number of incidents of criminal damage to cars in the Uplands area of the city have arrested a man.

"Over the past two months officers have received 29 reports of vehicles having their tyres slashed using a knife or a sharp instrument.

"A 28-year-old local man was arrested in the Uplands area and has since been charged with 52 offences of criminal damage to vehicles.

"He has been released on conditional bail to appear at Swansea Magistrates Court on Wednesday, December 19."

Some 26 out of the 29 cars that were vandalised were parked in Eaton Crescent, the other three were in Uplands Crescent.

All the attacks happened during the hours of darkness.

Last week police advised motorists to check their vehicles in the mornings before leaving home until the person responsible was caught.

Acting chief inspector Steve Jones of Swansea Central Police Station said his officers were receiving a lot of help from the community of Uplands as they investigated the incidents, and said the response from the public was a good example of how communities and the police can work well together.

He added: "Over the last week we have increased police resources to the Uplands community both in plain clothes and in uniform."
