Appeal to schools as gays suffer bullying
STONEWALL Cymru have published their response to the Stonewall School Report 2012 which shows that 55 per cent of lesbian, gay and bisexual pupils in secondary schools experience homophobic bullying.
The research, based on a UK wide survey of 1,614 young people, also found that nearly a quarter (23 per cent) of gay young people had attempted to take their own life, and more than half (56 per cent) deliberately harm themselves.
Stonewall Cymru are calling on all schools to have comprehensive and effective plans to tackle homophobic bullying that also create an inclusive learning culture.
Andrew White, Director of Stonewall Cymru, said: "It's unacceptable that over half of gay young people face a daily nightmare of homophobic bullying. We won't rest until every single gay young person in Wales can walk through their school gates every morning without fear of being bullied just because of the way they were born."
