BIG-HEARTED Evening Post readers have leapt at the chance to help a stray dog found suffering from horrific burns.

Staff at Llys Nini Animal Centre in Penllergaer have launched an appeal to pay for treatment for Ella, a stray found in Jersey Marine with severe burns to her face, belly and paws.

As the Post reported yesterday, her injuries are so bad that vets — who reckon the burns were caused by some kind of chemical substance — may be forced to remove one of her eyes.

And in the space of one day, the appeal has led to around £750 being donated, with more still coming in.

Centre manager Gary Weeks said: "The phones have been ringing non-stop with people giving donations.

"We must have had about £350 from people calling us in one morning. We also set up a justgiving site and that has probably raised another £400.

"The vets have already said they may have to remove one of her eyes and the ongoing care is going to last weeks, possibly months.

"We don't know how long it will take for the damage to repair, or if it is fully repairable."

How Ella, who is believed to be 4 or 5 years old, came by her injuries is unknown. It is possible she was deliberately attacked, or was burnt in an accident at home and then dumped by an owner who either would not or could not pay to have her treated.

Alternatively, she could have stumbled across chemicals that had been dumped somewhere in the Jersey Marine area.

There is concern that, if hazardous substances have been dumped, there are potential risks for residents and wildlife.

Mr Weeks said: "The RSPCA inspectors are aware of this case and will be taking a look around the area."

Neath Port Talbot Council head of regeneration Gareth Nutt said: "We advise members of the public to report any hazardous or suspicious- looking chemicals they may come across to call us on 01639 686868.

"If householders have any hazardous chemicals or unidentifiable waste at home that requires disposal, the council advises them not to use their wheelie bin or refuse sacks, but to take them to any of the household waste and recycling centres in Briton Ferry, Cymmer and Rhydyfro."

Cheques can be sent to Llys Nini Animal Centre, Penllergaer, Swansea, SA4 9WB. Donations can also be made online via: www.justgiving.com/ theellaappeal, or by contacting 01792 229435.
