Anti-wind? Here's why...
YES, Swansea Labour councillor John Bayliss' comments (Stand up to Nimbys, Sept 14) were insulting to the people who have had to suffer these near-useless wind turbines built near their homes. There are far more reasons why we all should not have these turbines.
As well as ruining our countryside for ever; as well as providing only 20 to 25 per cent of their energy capacity because of the intermittency of wind; as well as needing 90 per cent back-up from fossil fuel which will emit CO2 and make us more and more dependent on gas supplies from foreign countries; as well as causing health problems due to audible and inaudible noise called the wind turbine syndrome; as well as depreciating our homes; as well as killing millions of birds and bats; as well as often setting neighbour against neighbour; as well as all the huge infrastructure costs and despoiling of our environment in the form of massive substations, rows and rows of huge electric pylons, miles of transmission lines, what about the tons and tons of concrete needed for every wind turbine?
As a result of the Government's massive public subsidies for so-called 'green policies', householders' energy bills will soar year by year, resulting in so many more people suffering energy poverty, so where is the sense in all this?
No subsidies means no wind farms.

Tell us more about the 'massive contributions made to the Welsh Labour Parties (sic) coffers'.”

“@bennyhill4...as pointed out by taffjack1, the Fukushimu Nuclear plant was an old design, but despite that it was still considered to be an engineering success as it remained undamaged by the massive earthquake, the problem was that the defensive walls were only 5.7m high whereas the tsunami was 13m high.
A nuclear power plant has a reliable life of 50 years (twice as long as an unreliable wind farm, which only actually works for a 1/4 of its 25 years life), unless are seas are hit by a comet we will never see a wave of the size that hit Japan last year.
Goodbye unreliable windfarms.”

“Bennyhill4,
Have no fears, the Plant at Fukushima was a very old design, which was actually overdue for decommissioning. There is no way that anything like that will be built again. The 'melt down' occurred, due to a loss of cooling, caused by the Tsunami. As we are fortunately far from any 'Fault line', there isn't much chance of a massive Seismic event either.”

“I cant say i am pro or anti wind farms/ but after the earthquake in japan and the damage to their nuclear reactor and the potential catastrophe i know which one i would prefer out of those 2 options. i would rather have an eyesore and be alive to see it than the alternative”

“Taff Jack,
What a great post, clear, concise and informative. Am I right in thinking that one of the biggest producers of wind turbines Denmark, have stopped erecting them in Denmark?”

“The time has come to have an open debate on the subject.
What better person to Chair the debate, than Councillor Bayliss ? I am sure that he will start by stating his own interests and those of his Party, in this folly. It will be comforting to hear from him, that the massive contributions made to the Welsh Labour Parties coffers, by the UK's largest manufacturer of Wind Turbine Blades, don't play any part, in the Labour dominated Assemblies 'love affair', with wind.
The Politicians housed in the 'great hot air generator', in Cardiff Bay, may not have realised it but we most need Power, in the depths of Winter. Yes, that's right, when it is Winter time, we need more power than in the Summer and guess what ? The coldest days, are when we have sustained periods of high atmospheric pressure. Those clear and crisp days, when you wake to a hard frost, not a cloud in the sky and wait for it, not a breath of wind ! Oh my, on the coldest days last Winter, the sum total of power generated by Wind Turbines, was 'diddly squat'. What a good job, that the Fossile fuelled and Nuclear Plants were 'on line'.
We could however rely upon the power of the tide in the Severn Estuary. That would make a great and 100% reliable source of power. If we couple it to similar plants in North Wales, where the tides occur at a different time of day, we would have power, 24/7. I am sure that the plants will get the go ahead, any day now, just as soon as the water turbine manufacturers, start financially supporting Welsh Labour.
Look forward to providing the debate, with some qualified comment and Expert analysis.
