Angharad seals first win for U17s
WALES'S Under-17 girls secured their first ever win in their friendly with Belgium at Garden Village FC — the first ever international at the ground — thanks to a goal from Angharad James.
James fired in a 20-yard shot which goalkeeper Stepanie Maykens did well to save inside two minutes.
A Hannah Keryakopolis corner was headed clear before Belgium created their best opening, Megane Lerinckx seeing a shot pushed on to the bar by goalkeeper Gemma Jackson.
Sadie Mansell's shot was cleared off the line to keep the score 0-0 at half-time.
The breakthrough finally arrived midway through the second period when a Keryakopolis corner was headed home at the far post by James.
Swansea City's Lauren Hancock teed up Keryakopolis for another chance, but she shot over.
"All credit to the team, they're a new squad of players and they did exceptionally well to gain a good result," said Wales coach Terry Boyle.
"The under-17s age group has been going for only four years, and in all the previous friendly matches we've been unable to secure a positive result, so this could be the beginning of a new era."
