THE Justice Secretary has been accused of a "gross slur" against the police after saying that officers' claims to be over-worked are often an excuse, and that some prefer to sit in the station filling in forms rather than being on the beat.

Jack Straw has caused a storm of controversy with his comments, which have been branded "irresponsible and inflammatory".

Mr Straw said he was "rather sceptical" about the excuse that the police were overworked and therefore weren't able to reform.

"With a given level of resources, some police forces and some parts of police forces do much better than others," he said.

"It is the ones who are the less efficient and who have the wrong approach to the public who fall back on this argument that they are overworked.

"One police officer says it takes four hours to fill in the forms, whereas I can tell you that good police officers will take an hour to fill in the same forms because they want to get out and catch criminals.

"Some police officers — whatever they may say — actually enjoy staying in the police station in the warm."

The comments have provoked an angry reaction from Swansea councillor and South Wales West AM Peter Black, who said Mr Straw was trying to blame police for his party's failures.

He said his comments were "a gross slur on the professionalism of a hard-working but under-resourced profession."

But he said he agreed that good leadership at force level was vital.

The Justice Secretary's remarks have also met with a frosty reaction from the Police Federation.

It's vice-chairman, Simon Reed, called the comments "irresponsible and inflammatory".

He said: "It wasn't police officers who brought in 3,000 new laws, it wasn't police officers who brought in a 30-page prosecution file and it wasn't police officers who brought in multiple forms and authorities to use a pair of binoculars.

"This was all done by politicians. Police officers are not the architects of bureaucracy; they and the public are the victims of it."

“oh well I must apologize. I didnt realise it was confidential for someone to say 'Cant come to your party, my rest day has been cancelled' and 'will be late finishing, there's only me working'..
    Obviously it was”

“Claire may not have posted anything confidential what her police man friend is telling her but he should not be discussing his job with her anyway, its should be ALL confidential and stay at the police station. What else is he discussing with her and anyone else??”

“Hi Anon, Swansea. None of the details posted by Claire are in any way confidential, that kind of information would relate pretty much to individual cases which it doesn't.”

“Claire - Swansea, we hear what your saying but what about the numerous police officers just sitting in their cars or vans waiting for trouble to happen on wind street at the weekends usually oggling at the women going by?? This has been witnessed by many people, so yes your right it is appauling isn't it? !!Council tax payers do not pay the police to do this. And Yes I do know a few police officers, they not all the same granted but alot of them abuse their positions like the community officer that I happen to know who double parked his police car at mumbles on a busy day to go about his own business! Its a pity they not all got the same attitude as your friend to this profession. But be careful about what you post about what your friend is telling you because it is meant to be confidential information what the police officer does in their day to day job.”

    “Hi Claire,

Thanks for giving a bit of balance. The usual suspects love to have a dig at the police on here.

It is very simply a case of less police available to do a harder job with less help and respect from the public.”

“Well I have read the comments on here, and they are appauling. How many of you actually knowa police officer. Football games, they are not paid, they have their rest days cancelled. You see a lot of cars outside the stations, because there is only ONE police officer working. Get into the real world and stop blaming the police officers who not only have to take the abuse from small minded idiots but also the abuse that falls from the higher ranks. My friend works in Townhill and regularly there is just 2 officers working. Covering Townhill, Mayhill, Cockett, Manselton, and until recently Penlan, Blaen y maes, Brynhyfryd, fforestfach. So yes by all means they can just go walking, but what happens when they are in Blaenymaes, and someone is attacked in Gendros, or a store detective is being attacked in tesco. What do you want them to do wiggle their noses and suddenly appear at the scene.
I know some officers are lazy, and my friend has said that since the discipline has been taken away from training, there are a lot of officers who theink they are better than anyone. But dont assume everyone is the same. My friend regularly has to wait 2 hours to book a prisoner in to Swansea Central, and before now has had to take his prisoners to places like Barry, because Swansea is so busy. Wake up and maybe support the general bobby on the beat instead of planning their downfall. And another thing, it is too easy for whinging members of the public to make complaints against police these days. 15 years ago, you would have been told to get out of the station, and stop wasting police time. im sure this will upset a lot of the wonderful crime fighters of Swansea.. I await your returning emails...”

“The only contact with the law seen ona daily basis in South Wales is a PCSO on foot patrol, YES we do see the Police driving in their focus now and again BUT WHERE ARE THEY??? I know some coppers and the paperwork is beyond stupid for any offence (YES cut down on the red tape and make the paperwork easier, that way MORE coppers on the beat) What WINDS ME UP... Traffic Dept, near TAFFS WELL, AWAYS FULL OF BMW'S and when there's a football match, 300-400 coppers, WHO pays for that??? The last time swans played cardiff in Liberty stadium it cost 1/4 million of TAXPAYERS MONEY!”

“Normally I have respect for the police--Though attending one PACT meeting, I asked the local ward councillor a question about "Road Safety" in the area. Straight away and without any reason this police officer shouted out. "You are being political". My thoughts were you silly upshot pillock!, have you actually passed an intelligent test. Needless to say i haven't attended another PACT meeting since.”

“The police in this country are a joke. I have no idea what they do in their police station but the only time you see them outside is in their speed trap vehicles. I have been living where I live now for 3 1/2 years and have never ever seen a police presence, yet I regularly get questionaires to fill in on behalf of the police asking me say how impressed or not I am with them. Twice in the distant past I suffered vandalism and theft to my car, parked in my drive at the time, and the police couldn't be bothered, even to take the details.”

“As far as I am concerned, PACT stands for Police Approved Con Trick. Politicians are always coming out of on the side of the police because they get VIP treatment. I don¿t think Mr Black would be saying the same nice things if he or his family had to wait 18 hours for a police visit following a break-in when patrol cars are parked outside the local station all day long.”
